Want an FF12 HD Remaster? Better hope that FF10's upcoming HD makeover does well...

Key Final Fantasy developer Yoshinori Kitase has told RPG Site that success for the upcoming Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD Remaster titles could lead to further similar developments for other classic FF titles, including the much-loved FFXII.

"We'll have to wait and see if these remasters are going to be successful, first," the Producer of FFX and FFXIII told us at E3 2013.

"If they do well, I think this will pave the way for more of the previous games to remade in an HD sort of quality."

The obvious candidate. Yes please. Our next question was a natural one, of course - what title would Kitase like to see a HD Remaster of?

"I mean, if we HAD to single out one of the vast number of Final Fantasy titles which we could make in HD, it would have to be Final Fantasy XII," he said. "I was not involved in the project, though, so we can't really comment on that."

"What I can say though is that I hope the remastering of X and X-2 will trigger similar projects for more of the past games."

So maybe 3 years down the line we'll actually see it released -_-

Still, I'd much rather have XII than X, so this puts me in quite the dilemma.

I wonder what their expectations for "successful" is, too. Knowing Square Enix, the bar is quite high and they'll ignore how it performs relative to other HD Collections.

They fired the one who was setting those succes bars too high, so there is hope there. I hope if this remaster sell well, that it means PS1 era Final Fantasies can be remastered as well one day, one can dream :D

Why must it be XII? What about games that would much more benefit from an HD remake? What about FF VII, VIII or IX? Seem like much better candidates to me.

How about VII, VIII or IX before we worry about remaking XII?

I presume because in the article he keeps talking about "HD Remaster".

XII is the only other game I can think of that could be "remastered" in HD (possibly Dirge of Cerbarus and Crisis Core, too).  VII, VIII or IX would need a HD remake, so pretty much a full remake, which seems like an amount of effort Square-Enix is unwilling to put in.

Maybe yes, but on the other hand, they have to completely remake those games, which takes both money, manpower and the thing that Square loves to take most - time. With XII they will upscale the game to 1080p with some small improvements in lighting, shadows, and anti-aliasing, basically the same they did with X nd X-2. So they definitely re-release XII before even thinking about games from PS1 era.
