I hope you are speaking for yourself, as not everyone is in the same situation you are.

I'm not even particularly looking forward to this game. That said, my view of it is this: not every multiplayer game needs online play, and in some cases its exclusion can have social benefits. Some games benefit from having both online and local, but I've found that, in those cases, even good friends that are capable of actually hanging out would choose online. A good local-only game, just like sharing a meal together or playing sports, encourages friends to plan real social gatherings around them and is a higly rewarding experience that you just can't get when playing by proxy.

Nintendo obviously knows this--the last few Mario Karts have shown they can design a competent online multiplayer game, so its omission from a game like this means they are making a statement in support of those great times.

What happens if you dont have anyone that has a Wii-U or the game itself in your local area :(?

in that case , you wouldnt be able to play neither online or off-line....how would you be supposed to play the game without the console???????

Not surprising, but underwhelming. Not every game needs online play.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Well gee, thanks a lot Nintendo, that'll work GREAT with my social anxiety...

Sales haven't been affected by no-online for these types of games, so why start now?

I really don't get how anyone is defending this decision, but anyways that's a pretty lazy way of thinking lol. Just doing the bare minimum to recieve expected sales. Lazy lazy lazy! I always thought Nintendo wasn't like that. Oh, and online play certainly wouldn't hurt sales, so the real question is why not do it?

Because Nintendo is still first and foremost a company whose first priority is to ultimately make profits. The cost outweigh the benefits to have online, so they figured not to do it. Calling them lazy would be incorrect, but instead financially cautious would be a better description.

Hm, I don't care. Mario is a game you should play local anyways. Even if you play online with friends, dicking around isn't nearly as fun as it is local.

Oh well , not a deal breaker for me, will get the game still but would of loved some online multiplayer as an option ;p.

same for me, but that is what nintendo is expecting.

why spend money in online development and online servers if most/all ppl will still buy this game like sliced bread.
no point really ...

You mean we aren't actual friends???  You have no attachment to me because I'm a virtual friend...  I could have sworn there was a special bond unlike adding people you barely know on facebook.  No wonder people don't believe me when I tell them I have over 100+ friends.

I was...

and now...

Firstly, where did Nintendo say this was the reason? Second, shouldn't this logic apply to all their games? Why does Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and so many others have online play then?

Ask that question about Mario Kart, Mario Strikers, Pokemon, and the dozens of other franchise's that went online. Again, online play can only help sales as it makes any game a more worthwhile buy due to it's increased replayability and multiplayer options. Basically it'll more people happy, like me! Super Mario Cats was a definite buy for me after playing it, but then I saw this thread and now I'm not so sure as it'll just suffer the same fate as every Mario platformer other than Sunshine, which is once I beat the game, I'll never touch it again.

I didn't expect it to have online but now I think about it....what a wested opportunity! Obviously the gameplay lends itself to online effortlessly, but on top of they could have also used the gamepads camera for video convo whilst online. does the gamepad have mics for sound recording?
