Super Mario 3D World won’t have online multiplayer

June 15th, 2013 Posted in News, Posted by Brian, Wii U

Super Mario 3D World is the first 3D Mario game to offer four-player multiplayer. Gamers will be able to play as one of four characters, each with their own unique traits: Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad.

Unfortunately, Super Mario 3D World’s multiplayer will be limited to local play only. Nintendo has confirmed that you won’t be able to go online and continue the experience with others.

Director Koichi Hayashida and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi commented on the decision to not include online while speaking with TIME. Their main response was that Nintendo is focusing on seeing the other players around you. You can find Hayashida and Koizumi’s complete comments below.

Mr. Hayashida: I think that we’ve always wanted to focus on being able to see the other players around you. I always thought that was fun.

Mr. Koizumi: The first Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System had two controllers, so you could play multiplayer with someone right next to you. I think that we wanted to accomplish the same kind of feeling in a 3D Mario game for the first time.

Mr. Hayashida: I’ve always really enjoyed playing games with my children. In Super Mario Galaxy, we had the “assist play mode” that was available, but this is the first time that we’ve implemented a real multiplayer where the second player is moving a character around on screen in a 3D Mario game. And so I’m really happily looking forward to the experience of playing that with my kids.

Mr. Koizumi: And now that Peach has been included, I’m also hoping that people will be able to play the game with their girlfriends. Perhaps some of their girlfriends will find Peach as a more appealing character to play – or your wife, of course.

I don't see why people expected it to be online

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Not expected, but hoped. It would have been nice.

I will have to actually get together and hang out with actual friends in order to play this. Oh, the trauma.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

SMH what the hell Nintendo.

Not surprising. Still, it's not 2009 anymore, I shall not defend them for this decision.

Aww, really? Surely they realize they can make it so you can play with others localy and over the internet at the same time. Shoulda been a no brainer.

Cause there's absolutely no reason for it not to be online. =/

bah so dissapointed and not suprised nintendo is not embracing the online route. none of my friends play video games so it would of been awesome to see nintendo adopt the online ways and for me to have people to play with.

mario kart 8 is the only game i know of that will be pushed heavly for online play.. sadly sm3dworld is not :(

I hope you are speaking for yourself, as not everyone is in the same situation you are.

I just do not understand that response.

Nothing says they have to ditch local multiplayer at all. They can keep it just as it is right now. Although why? Why not in addition just add online multiplayer for those who want to still enjoy a multiplayer setting without people around?

I just, don't understand it. What's this issue with not wanting to add it?
