Forums - Gaming - Attitudes to DRM, Used game sales contradiction.

I'm making this thread really in response to the extreme negative discussion that has arisen with regards to Microsoft basically going gangbusters on piracy with the Xbox One. As a result of their decision to make DRM a top priority in an attempt to remove piracy altogether from the platform some extreme compromises are being forced on potential buyers, that can't be argued with and I'm not going to try. It sucks and will likely put off a lot of people.

However, my gripe with these people is that they are the same ones who frequently make posts about how the developers of games are going out of business because they aren't making enough money due to piracy, some of them also are staunch supporters of eliminating used game sales.

These same people also criticize the likes of EA for "online passses".

The issue here is that it's clearly impossible to have consumer friendly DRM policies and developer/publisher friendly DRM policies at the same time.

If I were strapped for cash I likely would not be buying an Xbox One and would go for a PS4 because these new DRM policies put me off. That's my decision, and it's a clear one, but I have never supported online passes, couldn't give a monkeys about used games sales or the fact that developers/publishers don't make as much money because they exisi.

I would like to hear from people who

1. Support the destruction of used game sales from the likes of GameStop etc.

2. Don't support the new DRM policies propossed by MS for the Xbox One.

3. Can explain a way that supports their ideological view on everyone being happy in the world on this matter in terms of removing used game sales and yet keeping consumer friendly DRM policies around.

As far as I can see, the polcies Microsoft are propossing don't affect many here at all, you're all hooked on your multiplayer so being connected 24/7 doesn't matter. You all want to save developers as if they were long lost blood relations...

What's the problem?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's terrible - but I never had a go at used games sales and piracy before.

I support consoles being open, hackable and so forth and have been shot down for supporting homebrew on the PS3 etc by people who think it's a travesty what's taking place.

Which takes me back to that the real problem is that you don't like Microsoft (my current assumption)

All ears on this, it's not flamebait, if you can explain yourself it will change my opinion, I honestly just don't understand the views of a large proportion of posters here and am doing the devil's advocate thing on getting some opinion.

Cheers :)

Someone who is against used games and the DRM policies??

Almost a paradox isn't it?

You don't need to kill used games to combat piracy. And Xbone won't be hackproof so piracy will still be a thing on Xbone.

My feeling is that publishers have come to accept that piracy is can't be truly defeated and that their only recourse is through the courts to prosecute people who get caught. But people who like to stay within the law are much easier targets, and thus you can go after used games and really screw it down into virtual oblivion.

I just can't stand the people saying: "but games don't need big budgets" And then they don't go out to buy quality title with less budget like Deadly premonition, Binary Domain, Spec Ops the Line and not supporting smaller budgeted games.. If you want to prove them wrong buy those games at 60 dollars when they come out..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Companies, like Crytec need to make games people really want. And not pump out graphics that make a game fail. That is the main issue here. They have to streamline their development cycle. When I heard Tome Raider failing at making a profit. You've done something wrong.

Exactly.

That one is very much a matter of opinion as to whether it's good or not. But it was also released at under $60. So people interested i it really had no excuse for not buying it.

I don't know about Binary Domain, but Spec Ops definitely interests me. But I have a massive list of games I'd like to play, but not enough funds or time to buy and play them. Spec Ops is just one among many on that score. Of course if I bought used then I'd have a much shorter list of games that I haven't played yet.

So far you've only responded to a person who is labouring under the same logical fallacy as you. Where's your all ears responses to those who are advancing sound arguments for why you should be re-thinking your position?

Nintendo is a developer, publisher AND hardware manufacturer.

They don't have a problem with the second hand game market.

Maybe the rest should be looking at them instead of releasing annual franchise games with absolutely no replay value after the next years rosters and guns have been updated.

What a confusing situation, lol. Who fits into this category?

I know I am a strong supporter of the used game industry and a strongly against DRM. Always have, always will be.
