Forums - Gaming - Lucas and Spielberg diss video games... Sigh.......

This is  my  first thread on Vgchartz and I thought why not make it interesting and since nobody  discussed this topic, I will give my two cents on it. So if you  check this link http://www.fangirlconfessions.com/lucas-spielberg-insult-video-games/ you will see Lucas and Spielberg saying that video games can't tell stories and can't create likeable characters. Oh boy, this will be fun...
First of all, those guys are pretty old and they are most likely out of touch. They think they live in the era where ONLY movies and books could tell stories that could entertain and create characters that you will care about. They most likely didn't even play games like BioShock Infinite that have really deep stories. Did anyone cry when Aerith died in FF7? I actually hated Sephiroth a bit for that. Yeah, that's what you call characters that you don't care about. Just as a side note, Spielberg  worked on Boom Blox for the Wii. The game was fun, but it wasn't good because of the characters and story, was it? It was because of the gameplay. Just to leave that out there.
Second of all, both of them are not as relevant as before. Look at George Lucas. The damn man is making underwhelming Star Wars movies since 1999 and yet he has THE BALLS that video games can't tell  good stories? Just wow. Even Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull  missed the mark by not offering anything fresh or enganing story-wise. Now let's discuss  Spielberg. The man is a hypocrite because he is working on a Halo TV show. Wait, I thought he wasn't a fan of video games, so why  he is working on a Halo TV show?  To try to give Halo a better meaning story-wise? I don't know.  Either way, Halo's story can be touchy at times. I can forgive Spielberg a bit because he directed some decent movies in recent years like Lincoln, but not enough.
Last of all. DON MATTRICK WAS THERE. http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/06/13/microsofts-don-mattrick-stands-silent-as-george-lucas-and-steven-spielberg-diss-video-games-but-praise-kinect/  He did not even try to defend  video games in general. Not even Halo. They don't care about video games. All they care about that money. Screw the consumer. Money is all we care about!
Anyway, what do you guys think? Is the way Spielberg and Lucas acting right? Are they wrong?

They are obviously wrong. Mario is the most deep, touching, and caring character I've ever seen.
And he's from a Video Game... so, take that Directors that think Video Games can't develop great characters!

Exactly. I just think it is ironic since one of the two men ( George Lucas) has yet to create a  Star Wars movie post-1999 that has memorable characters. Lucas it's a walking dead.

I'll take a direct quote before I care, considering the original statement that they said video games HAVEN'T done this has apparently already been twisted into meaning that video games CAN'T do it.

There is a generation gap.

I know 50+ aged people who still think games are all "Ataris" for kids or "losers who live in their parent's basements".

They did not grow up with them and experience them to understand how much they have evolved. Why it always annoys me when old poliiticans want to pass legislation yet never educate themselves on the medium.

They are still wrong. I gave two good examples. They act like all  we have  today are shooting games while they ignore BioShock Infinite, Ni No Kuni, Xenoblade and other games.

I'm actually surprised at Lucas, he made it a point to merge the game division with the film division to give them better resources.

Exactly again. I respect the elderly, but they need to stop living in the past and look into the bigger picture.

Well, I think the games industry still needs to improve it's storytelling a lot, the best movies, books, and tv shows blow away videogame stories imo... But, movies, and television were way behind books, and they caught up.

There has been, and will always have a lot of crap in everything, and lots of videogames have better story's and characters than star wars or many movies.... like star wars videogames themselves... haha

"Lucas was quick to add that the gaming industry can and will probably achieve that kind empathetic characters, but it hasn’t so far because the effort has been thwarted by hard-core gamers who enjoy onscreen violence too much."   A huge and wrong generalization.
