Forums - Nintendo - Why is there no Wii Sports U?

Wii Sports was perhaps the biggest system seller of all consoles history. Wii Sports 3 had to be a launch title for the Wii U. There is no excuse for it has not been one of their priorities for the Wii U, especially when even a niche title like Pickmin is getting a sequel.

This situation reminds me of the 2D Mario games where Nintendo waited almost 20 years to release a new one on a home console.

Because Nintendo developers only care about what is fun for them to make, not what is fun for the consumer to play.

Caused nintendo killed the wiimotes

When they first showed the Wii U off they seemed to have some cool ideas for accessible sports games. I remember a golf demo that looked awesome fun.

Seems like they've ditched it though.

Because WiiMote is a thing of the past. No such thing as long-lasting innovation, apparently.

There will be a 'Wii Sports U'. I agree with Maris and zorg1000. They're not dumping the ideas they had with the Golf demo and such.

It should come at some point.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Just like Art Academy was shown during E3 2011 and its development was confirmed this year. I'm pretty sure that Wii Sports U will also be in development since it was also shown in the WiiU reveal montage.

Because it appears to be the next Super Mario Bros. Extremely high selling, universally regarded series (yes, everyone loved Wii Sports besides the "serious gamers" and people constantly ask me if there's a Wii Sports U on the way) that was neglected by Nintendo due to their unwillingness to develop another one.

Seriously, a Wii Sports U with online multiplayer and *some* gamepad support would sell extremely well. But I guess they just couldn't force the gamepad into every single game so they probably scrapped it (remember, we even saw a demo at e3 2012 (or 2011, can't remember). I haven't lost all hope yet, personally. Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Art Academy and Wii Sports in 2014 would be a massive push towards the mass market for the Wii U (if the gamepad didn't exist... oh well.)

Not necessarily. One could say the same thing about Nintedogs/cats or that Brain training game and look at the franchises' sales with their latest games. If they do make a wii sports u game, i expect it to sell 4m at best, which is good, but far from what it was. Several people (all my friends- I know not reliable evidence) and myself bought wii for wii sports because of the novelty factor. Soon we got bored and regretted our decision (i'm sure not everyone feels like this). Mario Kart and Smash Bros have an actual fanbase and their sales don't depend on hype.

they did show the game at the first WiiU reveal with the use of the tablet to show the golf ball on the ground which was cool so it probably is in development but they want to add as much as they can to it so that it does not feel like another sports game with just a number on it
