Name a successful third console then, Mr. Scientist. GO ON. NAME ONE.

I believe in the "when console manufacturers get arrogant and start believing they can plug a controller into a taco and it will sell as long as it has their logo on it" curse.
That's where Nintendo was (twice?), where Sony was, and where Microsoft is. Many people were anointing them winners of next generation by default. They started to believe their own hype, I think, and took growth in market share as a given.

Tch. What about Nintendo's third portable console? Huh? That's got to count, right? No doubt that was hella successful. Let's see what Wikipedia says, shall we?
Virtual Boy.
Whatever. I don't want to hear it.

Never thought about that. I think the "first console curse" is a much more impressive coincidence.
That is, the first console relased on the generation did not win said gen
The Genesis was the first 16-bit console. Lost to SNES.
The Saturn released a few months before the PS1. Was a failure.
Dreamcast was the first of the 128-bit era. Suffered a premature death.
Xbox 360 was the first of the seventh gen. Ultimately, became third place of the gen.
And the Wii U is having very disapointing sales.

Not really.
The Saturn is Sega's 4th home console. SG-1000 -> Master System -> MegaDrive/Genesis -> Saturn
The N64 is also Nintendo's 4th console: Color TV Game -> NES -> SNES -> N64
