Forums - Microsoft - Further evidence that MS is potentially having hardware issues in cooling.

It would have probably had issues if it were the size of the PS4, but since it's much larger and external power brick, the cooling should be both sufficient and quiet. I would be well surprised it that will not be the case.
Also, MS will have the chance of radical redesigns and size reductions in the future.
Does anyone know the weight of the thing?

This is obviously an assumption on my part based on generalization of the hardware physical size difference between Xbox One and PS4.

Considerations:

1) Existing rumors from over a year that discuss issues MS is having with its yields on its APU.
2) My comparison thread that shows MSony have nearly identical configurations internally.

  • same cpu
  • MS using smaller gpu but adding 32MB of embedded memory on APU
  • both  have separate 8gbs of ram (separate in terms of not in apu)
  • 500gb HDDs
  • PS4 has internal PSU while Xbone uses brick in power cord (this is a huge difference here)
  • BR drive in both
  • Same basic other connections (usb, hdmi, etc)

Yet, the Xbox One is significantly larger. Why? The only real possibility is cooling. MS has a much larger need to reduce internal heat on their configuration than Sony does. Thus they have a larger cooling solution and increased inside volume in order to dissipate heat better.

While at surface value this is a big so the fuck what scenario, when you take it into account along with the rumors of MS having issues with their APUs due to added complexity of having eSRAM on the chip, then you have a supported concern that yes, this device very well may have cooling issues which was the big culprit in RROD.

Obviously take this with a big grain of salt as its just my assumptions. However, I think it makes perfect sense.

No.

The only console that had a problem during their E3 presentation was the PS4 with two separate demos crashing.  In each case the GPU obviously had problems.

No, the size of the Xbox One is so it looks more like a piece of home entertainment equipement.

The PS4 is 12.8" deep.  The Xbox One is 10.4" deep.
The PS4 is 10.8" long.  The Xbox One is 13.5" long.

If you turn the PS4 on its side, it's almost the same dimension as the Xbox One.  It's just 3/4" longer, yet just under a 1/2" narrower.

The only dimension where the PS4 is signficantly smaller, by percentage, is height.  Here the PS4 is 2.1" tall, and the Xbox One is 3.2".

Wow!  Oh My GOSH!!!!  The Xbox One is SO much bigger!!!

The difference in area is 2.16" square.  Do you really think 2"sq is going to make a big difference in terms of cooling?

Battlefield 4 crashed on the Xbox One. Assassins Creed froze but unfroze and Destiny had a lag problem that lasted for 2 seconds in which that was a server problem not a PS4 problem.

battlefield didn't crash it was running smooth... sound feedback was off in the auditorium that's it.... don't know about sony though... got tired to watch since i couldn't get a steady stream.... but crashes for a piece of tech is pretty normal.... I have yet to see a single device that never crashed on me.... heck even my oven did a month ago and I had to reboot it lol

Why are sony fanboys trying so hard to bash microsoft by starting articles/threads with fake info about the xbox?
I see this everywhere, they must be getting paid good money from sony to look for stuff that is not there. All the spec talk is just nonsense when we saw amazing games at E3 despite them saying otherwise.

SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH they make me laugh, let them talk....

we have great games, we have a nice looking box that will visually fit most entertainement settings, we have a true next gen concept box, and entertainement center that nobody matches so far with a single device, we have the most advance tracking and voice control system in entertainement, we have future proof console with cloud support and digital distribution embition.... well we have the ONE and ONLY true next gen entertainement device.... and that my friend nothing can beat it in my book so far :D

and to be honnest I ain't a MS fanboy its just that Sony as whole is on my black list corporations right next to Crapple, Scroogle, Bose shit, and anything Beats audio... notice how I rarely if ever comment about nintendo, cause I actually respect that company even if they don't satisfy my needs at the moment....

There is not ''evidence'' what so ever and you ''heating'' theory doesn't make any sence.

The XBOX elite and slim had vastly reduced RROD rates, the latter console being even smaller than the orignal model. I don't see how size has anything to do with this.

The Kinect must have something to do with the large console size.

Look at the size of the thing! There are also vents everywhere. They more than likely made it to specifically target any RRoD like issues that may occur. Misleading thread title. This is nowhere near evidence. Why was the PS3 made so big? Imagine how many more YLOD's may have occurred if it was smaller? I understand where you're coming from but at least change the thread title, it just looks like you have an agenda otherwise.

Actually, the PS4 has vents everywhere.  The Xbox One has a single back vent on one-half of the console, and the entire top of the same side.

It is, incidentally, the same design they used with the Xbox 360 S & E.

Sony's design has vents on three sides.

Good to know, though I said nothing about the PS4!!

Thanks, I missed that one.  Spot on.

It does? From the pictures I've seen they don't seem to be that obvious.

The vent is in the inset portion, on the back and sides.  On the sides, if the inset is a U channel, it's on the bottom side of the channel, it could also be on the top but that isn't visible.  The front is the only portion where it doesn't exist.

This image shows the rear, and you can just make out the side vents on either side on the bottom of the channel.

This image shows the side.  You can make out the angular vents on the bottom side of the channel that extend front to rear.

If it weren't for two things, I would really like the PS4 design.  The angle of the front and back, and I think they should have flipped the division of the case.  I think the larger side should have been on the left, and the smaller one on the right.  That way, the Blu-Ray player wouldn't have been almost in the middle.

And yes, I would have been happier with the Xbox One if it was actually more rectangular rather than having that odd angle in the front.

Thanks for this. I hadn't seen the rear of the console (that sounds wrong... but you get what I mean). I was slightly worried about cooling on the console but that looks quite open to aeration.

The designs are growing on me. The parrallelogram is a little strange but I think it could work in my entertainment centre.
