Forums - Sony - Sony: Third-Party DRM Refers to Playing Used Games Online Only

http://www.gamefront.com/sony-third-party-drm-refers-to-playing-used-games-online-only/

"The Online Pass program for PlayStation first-party games will not continue on PlayStation 4. Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever.

This is good news for gamers, indeed. In a nutshell, you can buy a used single-player game for the PS4 and play it all you want. If you want to go online with it, you may have to deal with some sort of publisher-determined DRM, be it an Online Pass or whatever."

Do you get it now? Sony wins.

Good, good. I mean, not perfect and I'll still boycott games that use online pass as I've done so far (which might not be even relevant in this case as I'm not sure if I'm getting a PS4 or not) but this is kind of acceptable. At least there's some choice involved.

And totally not relevant, I imagine, but is there anything to stop publishers from putting their whole games, including single-player components, behind online passes? I don't expect anything like this to happen even if it's possible, I'm just curious if it's possible or not.

Thanks for the clarification.

For your second part, I don't see why not. There is nothing stopping publishers doing what they want, but there is currently nothing stopping them from doing that. It's just the same system as this generation for PlayStation

Great news once again Bring on November.

That's good to hear, now if only EA and Ubisoft follow suit.

I should hope not since you have to pay for online now.

So on the Xbox One you can sell your games to participating retailers without any fee.
You can sell it to a friend as long as he is on your Xbox One friendslist for more than 30 days.
Games you bought used can't be sold again.

On the PS4 you can sell your game to every retailer and private person.
If you buy a used game, you probably need to pay an extra $10 fee to play it online.

Correct?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Turkish beat you to this one.

Locking.

Not sure, I'm guessing since there is now a pay wall to play games online it pretty much eliminates the need for an online pass...or not.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
