If my friends are racing online already does it say so in the friends list in the MK8 Online menu? I check for friends at random times and haven't been able to figure it out yet.

It'll tell you what your friends are playing on the Friends List. I'm also pretty sure there's a little flag icon next to their name if they are online in MK8. (Or is that only when they have a room open?)

Yes, they have a checkered flag next to their name. If you click on the player, you will get informed what they are playing and asked if you want to join.
