Forums - Gaming - PlayStation 4's price and DRM policies not made in response to Xbox One, Sony exec says

The PlayStation 4's price and DRM policies were welcome announcements to those watching Sony's E3 press conference, but they weren't created in response to the same policies for Xbox One, Sony VP of Worldwide Studios Scott Rohde told Polygon in an interview earlier tonight.

"I literally have goosebumps right now, because that was always our plan," Rohde said. "It's something that we believe in. We know gamers come first; we know what they want. I was personally overwhelmed with the massive explosion on Twitter, with everyone essentially begging, 'Please don't do this Sony, please don't do this PlayStation!' It was so hard not to say, right away, 'Well, we never were going to do that, but now let's have a little fun and announce it in a fun way at the PlayStation press conference.'

"Could not believe how much the roof came down with that applause," Rohde added. "It was awesome."

Sony also announced that the PS4 would launch for $399, a good $100 cheaper than the price announced by Microsoft this morning for its Xbox One console. Again, Rohde said Sony had set that lower price well in advance of its competitors.

"I mean, that was such an amazing message," Rohde said. "We kind of had a feeling; we kind of knew we were gonna land a little bit cheaper than those green guys. When it was verified this morning, we've just been walking around with smiles all day."

The best part "When it was verified this morning, we've just been walking around with smiles all day."

It's a fun statement if you consider how both of those were delivered at the conference itself, ha. Just digging their nails in deeper, I see...

Bullsht it wasn't. The guy specifically said "no online check every -24 hours- or ever."

A great win if you are a Sony fan. Today just show's why they have been in the console game for this long.

So they just so happened to mention no online connection every 24 hours?

Hmm...fishy.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Not sure if I can believe the DRM part. Back in February they said they will leave it to publishers, now at their conference they played it up that used games will not get blocked, period.

The price certainly wasn't in response to Microsoft, because I highly doubt that Sony in their current financial situation would make a decision that negatively impacts revenue and profits in the range of $1 billion within a few short hours.

I think you right but I'm sure now any PS4 game will have DRM for offline play... the online play will be like PS3 with online pass (so it is leave to publishers).

The price part I think Sony choose a cheaper console this time... PC like, not super high-end components, etc... I think Sony will tie or only have a small loss with this price.

now that we have to pay to play online, it'd be stupid if Sony were to continue their practice of having online passes. Im sure EA will probably bring back their online passes and other publishers might as well, but Sony, now that we're paying for it, that's a way to get on gamer's bad side. It'll be much worse if EA don't have online passes but Sony does.
