I can't see the system being less than $399, but that would be quite a decent starting point.

As for why Sony wouldn't want to take a loss on the system, look at their financials, they are nowhere close to the company they were back in 2006, they cannot afford a big loss on this. Something less than $50 is my guess, that way within a year or so they are quite likely to start turning a profit on their hardware.

400-450 $/€ would be the best range of prices. Lower than that and the losses would be too big, and more than that would have a negative impact on the sales.

The same goes to the Xbone.

I expect the consoles to sell at around $399 maybe a $450 sku that is bundled but $349 would be sweet. Unless it would make the company bleed to death in an instant. Then I would rather not have that.

$399 wouldn't cause them to lose much money on every system sold.  They won't take $300 in losses for every PS4 sold like with the PS3.

The same strategy worked for PS1 and PS2. Put Sega out of business and ended Nintendo dominance in the console world.

$399 base model / $450-$499 larger HDD model. Pretty much same as Xbone.

would be surprised if its 399 as thats what there implying when saying below 400, i would say there top tier console will launch for 499

if it does launch for 399 or lower dont expect similar large frequent price drops the ps3 had

those things happened mostly because of mistakes from nintendo and sega. and that same strategy didn't stop nintendo from recaliming the dominance and almost killed sony.
