Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One: Microsoft Doing “Reputation Management” For Negative Criticism?

I personally know three people in PR who do this for a living on all types of interactive and social media, for all types of products and services and political organizations. It's Marketing 101 in the internet era.

This is NOT news. They all do it. It's called AstroTurfing -- as in planting fake "grassroots" movements online to forward your product (or take down a competitor a notch.)

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

What's worse 2006 Sony or 2013 M$? It seems as if the 2 have switched roles. But ever since M$ lost originals of the xbox, J Allard, Robbie Bach, Eddie fries and Peter Moore they have been going downhill. While Mark Cerney is bringing Playstation to the top again.

Is the stock answer from Xbox fans going to be 'everyone will get it' or 'everyone does it' from now on?

THe thing is, thats really all the defenders, have been saying, that or SOny is doing it too. I am still waiting for someone to explain how this is a good thing for customers. It's barely good for the damn companies.

Spies for a given side of a console war, reminds me of a real war

It's not just on this forum, it's spreading everywhere. It's as if now that the rumours have been proven right about the power of the two consoles and the policies of MS, people are in bunker mode.

The PS5 Exists.

The thing that tickles me, is that the stock answers are either speculation or just flat out wrong. Two personal favorites "PC does it, but people don complain" actually the whole reason FOR console gaming is to avoid playing on PC (at least for me) and the DRM on PC isnt anywhere near what it will be on Xbone and the prices are better on PC.

everyone does it is flat wrong. Yup i just bought wreck it ralph bluray and that new Eve cd and both are tied to my PS3 and car stereo. I cannot use those on another bluray player or cd player without permission. My friends cant borrow it. Give me a damn break.

Well they are the masters of FUD and cant let the xbone do the talking then they have already lost

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Everyone does it.. I doubt on a small site like this without any social media plugin.. Cause you would only have to manage like 200 active users.. Not worth it..

Anyway having worked with this software this is how it goes... You can have special software "scanning" websites like facebook, reddit, twitter, pintrest google+ etc on key words like for example "coca cola" then you scan on words like "suck" "tasteless" "discusting" etc.. The system warns you when there is a pattern emerging.. For example if "I found a pinky in my Coca Cola" was retweeted 5 times..

Normally one of the active social media managers would step in at that point..
A lot of companies are using systems like these but also local goverments, countries, educational institutes, musicians and moviestars..

Microsoft Denies Hiring Marketers To Vote-Cheat Negative Xbox One Reddit Threads

[Update: Looks like there was something very fishy going on and the Reddit administrators mentioned they would investigate any foul play. Countless Reddit accounts have been deleted in the threads, as showcased in screenshots herehereand here]

Information in a post on Reddit that was on the tip of going viral has been deleted. The poster, MistySilver, made some bold claims that were partially corroborated by other paid marketers on the thread. Several websites reached out to Microsoft for clarification and Microsoft responded.

You can check out the remnants of the highly volatile thread on Reddit right hereBusiness Insider's Julie Bort had the intestinal fortitude to do a nice write-up about the situation and offer Microsoft a voice by asking them whether or not any of it was true.

The gist of the situation is that MistySilver claimed that while working in Redmond on a marketing team, Microsoft had hired other marketers to come in and run reputation damage control, similar to what the EA viral marketer claimed last year. The Reddit post claimed that viral marketers were vote-gaming news posts on Reddit, GameFaqs and other large sites to quell some of the outrage happening over the policies for the Xbox One that have been made public.

The Next Web reached out to Microsoft as well, and the Redmond-based company had a representative respond with an e-mail that left a lot unexplained or very vague, similar to the Xbox One policies two weeks ago. After a couple of times, due to unclear responses with lots of room for interpretation, the company's final, revised message was as follows...
There is no coordinated or sanctioned effort by Microsoft employees, or anyone paid by Microsoft, to unduly influence Reddit or other online forums.

So...what about other firms hired to hire marketers? Would that count?

Anyway, we already warned our own gaming audience in a guide on how to spot a viral marketer in the gaming community

We're no strangers to the propaganda machine around these parts, and I would certainly advise you to be wary of individuals trying to calm the rage surrounding the anti-consumer policies of the Xbox One, befuddle the conversation or misdirect attention by dragging misinformation about the PS4's policies into the discussion

Across each major gaming site you might find a collection of individuals trying to say “It's not that bad, it's just like Steam”, in which case, we can all agree that the Xbox One is not like Steam, but trying to compare a very anti-consumer measure to a very pro-consumer service helps dissuade the rage. In fact, IncGamers has a very appropriate article detailing the differences between Steam's DRM and the Xbox One's DRM.

For those of you curious what was actually said in that Reddit post, we have the image below that you can read in full. It's all very interesting if true. Sadly, most of all the reposts have been removed by Reddit admins (possibly at request?) so see for yourself what they didn't want you to read.

I feel like this video is relevant. While not viral marketing, it might be even worse considering he talks about major websites. I also included the twitter exchange  he is referring to. I'm having some serious embedding issues, so I just have to include the links....sorry.
