Idk, I would only use steam digitally for games I never planned on reselling. Truthfully I never use PC anymore for gaming.

On WiiU I have a choice on just about every game. If its a game I know I'll never want to lose or sell, then I buy digitally. If its a game l think I'll sell after I finish it, I can buy on disc.

That makes sense as they are clearly two different mediums with trade-offs. MS is removing those freedoms of ownership and that is what I dislike.

@bolds: In that case, not that much different from what Sony has said so far.

You're joking, right?  How is that anything like what Sony has said.  Sony stated 3rd parties have to come up with their own method of DRM, as they won't have it.  MS's DRM is built right into the system.  Also, when they say "publishers can enable" these features, it seems like as a standard it will be blocked.  I wonder if this means MS's 1st party will have them disabled.  As far as used games go, stores will have to join MS's program to even sell Xbox One games.  And considering the PS4 can be enjoyed "old school," I doubt they are only going to allow a single copy to be traded only once.

Not only could you only sell to participating retailers, but the game's publishers would first need to allow the option to do so?

How Games Licensing Works on Xbox One

With our modern architecture, Xbox One games will load more quickly, will be always accessible from the cloud, and there is no physical limit to the size or scope of the content provided. 

Here are our platform policies and capabilities for game licensing – all of which will be made available when Xbox One launches later this year:

Buy the way you want—disc or digital—on the same day: You’ll be able to buy disc-based games at traditional retailers or online through Xbox Live, on day of release. Discs will continue to be a great way to install your games quickly.

Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud.  So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games.  Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games.  You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.  Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games. 

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. With 802.11n, Xbox One can use the 5GHz wireless band which eliminates considerable interference from other devices in the home, such as cordless phones, Bluetooth devices and microwaves.  Xbox One uses two wireless antennas, versus one in Xbox 360. This provides dramatically better coverage and sustained performance, which means faster internet speeds in more areas of your home.

Faster connection to a world of smart devices: With Wi-Fi Direct, Xbox One can speak directly to smart wireless devices and connect to them through the cloud. This means your smartphone or tablet will interact with Xbox One seamlessly.

Future proofed with power from the cloud: Microsoft has created a global network of more than 300,000 Xbox Live and Windows Azure servers, to help creators realize their visions of what is possible with a connected system.  

Networking Requirements

To ensure Xbox One works optimally and can offer the experiences described above, it is designed with the following networking requirements: 

For an optimal experience, we recommend a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps. (For reference, the average global internet connection speed as measured recently by Akamai was 2.9 Mbps).  In areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband.

While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection. 

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

How Xbox One and the new Kinect Sensor Put You in Control

Xbox One and Kinect offer easy and approachable ways to control your games and entertainment with your voice and gestures. By recognizing you, Xbox One can tailor personal experiences and customize content just for you. 

At Microsoft, we prioritize your privacy. We understand that your personal data and privacy are important. Xbox One and Kinect will provide tools to put you in control of your data.  These include:

You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded. 

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios:

A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned.

A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions.

You can use other inputs to control your games, TV and entertainment experiences: While it’s faster to find what you’re looking for using your voice and gesture commands with Kinect, you can use a controller, your remote controls or your smart devices instead. And you can use all of these devices when Kinect is paused.

Okay it has built in Wi-Fi but so far this keeps Xbox One Away from people with out internet acess...which is not a large percent of console buyers so i'm fine with it....

Powered state options in conjuction with "Connected State" seems to be their answer to a fail rate like RRoD....

Skype is Huge World Wide..I hope no one is underestimating the this feature...

MS owns high standard Wi-Fi technology if you don't know look it up....And on top of that Xbone has TWO Wirelesss antennas!!!

This is good...But might be limited to MS devices..Surface is High Rated....

Xbone might connet via wi-fi on it's own as long as it has a power source just to update...or am I interpretating this wrong...

You're jumping to conclusions that do not exist.

There are laws about used clothes, cars, books, music, (fill in any other physical commodity)....

If you buy it, you own it. That is it.

I bought a game on a disc for $60... $45.. $15. It doesn't matter what I do with it, I own it. If I want to give it to my nephew because his poor parents can't afford shit.. I should be able to. If he then wants to give it to his little brother... he should be able to.

If I want to resell it on eBay so I can buy some other new game or new console by selling all my used shit, I should be able to.

This is 100% bad for consumers of every industry because if it works and is accepted, say goodbye to used everything that can be digitally tracked.

I can say ti everyoen here who assumes taht sonmy won't do it based on vague answer givien by sony employers. They hav eyet ot explain in detail how their policy works. I respect your opinion. However gaming is a luxury hobby . Its not jsut a hobby that can be picke dup anyone. For example if you are in really low socio economic category then  you shouldn't be be gaming at all. You should be  focussing on how to support family, yourself, getting an education  and so on. Gaming would be least of their worries.  If he has a console but can't buy all the games then all he needs to do is to wait till the game priuces dropped and then uy it. Is taht really hard for people to do these days or do peopel expect to get off scott free? When you buy a game, you are purchasing the right to use that license and thats  it. Anyone who borrows teh game is still the previosu owner llicense intead of supporting teh developer and payign for tehir own license ot play it. That has being going on since the ps1 days and teh drm stuff for it could hav e been eaasily implemented if they wanted to do. The only difference this gen its closely monitored so studios who develop the game gets thesale tehy deserve. Tell me this ,, is it okay for us to prevent a slae of agme  incerasing teh chance of clsoign a studio dsown because we decied to laend our games ot friend who would never spend a penny ?  This policy by MS reminds me of Steam and it works perfectly.

A guess...Sony will have something, but won't be anywhere near what MS just announced, and perhaps EA is already punishing them for it (see: Titanfall, Fifa exclusive mode).



I'm not down with only being able to lend or borrow a game from a Friend once. I have a friend that has no internet connection and since he has no account then I won't be able to lend him anything. That just sounds so intrusive. This is the kinds of move I'm hoping will not become a industry norm.



Welcome to the digital age, luddites. Steam is working out just fine, there was the same backlash before but now we get great sales, redownload anytime you want, and play on multiple PCs. The benefits of steam far outweighs the cons and discs do not last forever, they get broken, lost, or rot which means you are SOL.

Disc based gaming and lending out to friends was a loophole waiting to be closed, because it's more fair that the devs get paid per person who plays the game. They just didn't have anyway of tracking that so it probably was built into the price of the game. This way it will probably be more fair instead of eventually making games to be hundreds of dollars to account for the leechers who don't contribute back anything even though they get to play the game for free or nearly free as a loaner or rental.
