Forums - Microsoft Discussion - With all the talk about Yahoo, imagine if MS was trying to buy Sony instead

interesting thought...

so much stuff to digest though, in such a merger.

...

i don't see sony gaining as much as microsoft though. so microsoft would have to pay a hefty premium. it is paying about a 60% premium for yahoo. 60% premium is probably enough for sony as well, but that's just not good value for microsoft.

i don't think there's a good price point from either perspective.

the Wii is an epidemic.

-Microsoft could move Sony Computer Entertaiment under Microsoft Game Studios allowing them to control it.

-Sony could be phased out with anything worthwhile (people/technology) moved to Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division

-Microsoft could phase out the Playstation brand and finally have success in Japan (Xbox 3 would be a monster console with franchises such as Halo, Gran Turismo, Gears of War, Ratchet & Clank, Banjo Kazooie, Fable, God of War, Resistance, etc and likely have control of other key franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Final Fantasy, EA Sports, etc.)

-Microsoft could drop Blu-Ray, allowing for their investment in HD-DVD to pay dividends.

Fixed.

Well, thats what I would do.

Also, Sony is worth less than MS offered for Yahoo.

Sony has more experience and seems to have more success with it's gaming studios so I think that Microsoft's ones would benefit from being under Sony for that part of the company.  Also the Playstation brand is more attractive in Japan and Europe so it would probably be the brand that would be better to use.

I think a Microsoft/Sony merger of some kind would benefit both companies:

-Sony is good at hardware which would go well with Microsoft's software focus.

The problem is that Microsoft doesn't do software well.

There would be far more benefit for Sony to partner with someone like Apple. I don't see why Sony would want to merge with Microsoft.

That doesn't matter much, because when you buy a company you typically have to pay much more than it is currently worth. For example, Microsoft is offering 60% more than what Yahoo was worth yesterday.

If they were to try and buy Sony at the same premium, they'd have to offer $73.15 billion.

This thread is nothing more than a dream, something like this is not likely at all since the two companies are so different.

Thats an interesting idea, and while I like the idea of being able to play the best of both on one console, it would benefit Sony and Microsoft a lot more than it would help me. and like others have said, I doubt Sony would go for it.

You would throw the more talented and experienced team and put the inexperienced and newly formed guys in charge?

And phasing out the Playstation brand wouldn't help MS as would help Nintendo become a monopoly.

That would suck as a gamer if MS bought sony. If you thought $600 was bad for the ps3, expect to pay a lot more for the next system, and have it come with trial software that u would have to purchase 90days later or else your console will be gimped.

-Microsoft could phase out the Xbox brand and finally have success in Japan (Playstation 4 would be a monster console with franchises such as Halo, Gran Turismo, Gears of War, Ratchet & Clank, Banjo Kazooie, Fable, God of War, Resistance, etc and likely have control of other key franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Final Fantasy, EA Sports, etc.)

That's an interesting point. If this hypothetical Playstation 4 from MS/Sony would have all these games you mentioned and we take out the franchises that generally don't sell a whole lot in Japan we are left with Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy. Exactly what Sony's Playstation 3 has now. It takes much more than that to win over Japan.

If Sony/MS were to combine Japan would become irrelevant and Japan won't just stick loyal to Nintendo either, I thought the Playstation 1 would have taught Nintendo fans that. With the money both companies have, combined with their underhanded tactics, it would create one hell of a monopoly and it would suck, especially for Nintendo.

In saying that, Sony would never agree. If Sony were to merge with anyone it would be with Apple or Panasonic. No one else.

And Microsoft cannot buy Sony for what they offered Yahoo.....

That would be crazy.

I wouldn't mind having 2 consoles instead of 3, but there would be many downsides from a business standpoint.

I think it would be more likely to buy Nintendo.
