Woo! Debunked. Oh ye console fans of little faith.

I'd hope they'd be smart enough to actually offer a large HDD. This 32GB -> 64 GB upgrade is laughable for a console.
People seem to be missing the point. If Nintendo starts it's major push at e3 - as has been said they will - and that push says "get your deluxe 32 gig Wii U in white or black" - like Japan - then 8 Gig Whites hanging around could cause confusion. There is surely going to be a new "one model" focused promotion and they can't have these 8 gig's out there. Otherwise they would just discount them.

Doesn't suprise me that their trying to redistribute the 8gb model. The Best Buy I work at has been sitting on probably over 15 of them for the past 5 months. Nobody buys it, people just like the fact that everything comes in one complete package with the deluxe. System, game, larger memory, and more accessories.
They need bigger hdd anyways but this is not a good thing sony and ms always leave the old sku on the shelves so this is def a matter of sales

Damn, that's a lot. |
I'm not gonna lie, I got hype for a second. XD
Still, this is probably for the best considering most people probably got a Deluxe anyway. Might as well put the Basic models collecting dust to work.
My guess is that GameStop requested that Nintendo take back some of their stock. This isn't something that would normally happen otherwise, as shipping product around is expensive.
Speaking of expensive, there is no way Nintendo would have taken back new product in order to add more memory. That would be hugely expensive and would represent quite a loss per console.
