Forums - Sony - PS1 vs PS2 vs PS3 vs PS4 GRAPHICS (HD 1080P)

People saying the two next gen consoles are only a small step above current gen, are only fooling themselves.

I'm one of those people who has said that.  While there will be a noticeable difference, it will not be as big as going from the PS2 to PS3.  People just remember the games on PS3 & Xbox as being better than they really were.  I've pulled Gamecube, PS2, & Xbox games out to play recently, and what we have on the systems today is a huge improvement.  The games of the next generation will also continue to improve as time goes on, but other than better lighting and less jaggies (there will still be jaggies visible on my 60" TV at 1080p), they are not going to look like as big of a difference as you may think.

Stop hating and start playing.

Graphically, games have improved a ton over the past 30 years:

Mario Bros, 1983

Super Mario Bros. 3, 1990

Super Mario World, 1991

Mario 64, 1996

Super Mario Sunshine, 2002

Super Mario Galaxy 2, 2010

New Super Mario Bros. U, 2012

But, I think we are at a wall with the new hardware that is coming out, the limitation is not due to the hardware's power, but rather the cost of developing assets/animations/etc. and the limit of ability of the people creating those.

That said, I think developers need to get back basics.

Games should be fun to play.

I find that too many games coming out nowadays focus on cutscenes/quick time events and are pitifully easy to beat (and to top it off, they often have repetitive/empty/or boring game worlds). I actually ended up with less PS3/Wii games than I have PS1/PS2/PSP/DS/or GC games.

Lately, I have been going back buying pre-2005 games that I have never heard of.

It has been a ton of fun playing these (new to me) old games.

I just hope the good games keep coming to 3DS and Vita. It seems to be the last bastion.

Nice video! Makes me excited to think of what is coming in the future.

I think/hope towards the end of the 8th gen things will look super realistic. If they continue getting better during a generation as they have the 7th.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Some of the comparisons were better than others. The first one shown didn't do much for me.
The killzone one was pretty good at the end with PS3 vs PS4, as I could tell the difference was more than just the graphics. There were multiple physics differences you can easily spot in that one.
The racing ones were pretty good, too but overall you can tell that visually the gap is getting smaller. This coming up gen, we wont be impressed with graphics as much as we will be impressed with particle physics, advanced lighting techniques, draw distances, facial rendering (or whatever you call it), AI, and other physics-related things. Or that's what I think.

Impressive how great PS4 looks. Can't wait

most of them are nintendo supporters.

I haven't read that anywhere, from any supporter.

I've heard that the gap will be the "smallest" and I tend to agree, but still a decent step and I can't wait to see it on my TV for myself.

It's not so much that PS3-PS4 is "unnoticeable", it's more that each leap is smaller than the last.

Leaps have been shrinking progressively ever since the enormous SNES/Megadrive - N64/PS1/Saturn leap.

Depends (imo) on how you compare.

If you compare PS3 launch titles to the in-game footage of the launch titles shown at the PS4 reveal, the improvement is incredible. Comparing KZ2 and KZ: SF... gap is much bigger than KZ3 and KZ:SF. Comparing games that has released in Feb. or later to footage at the PS4 reveal, and that gap shortens (mind you this is footage of games that won't release until fall)

So it depends how exactly you compare

Will be cool to compare Watchdogs or Destiny footage from PS3 and PS4. They release on both at same time I think

Amazing how all the PSX games are running on an emulator at quite a higher resolution and texture filters.

Exactly what I thought when they showed Crash Bandicoot...

Yeah. I'm so sick of hearing that.

The other day a dude on here was saying his old tube tv was comparable to today's LCD/Plasmas.

Fucking ridiculous
