Forums - Nintendo - Intelligent Systems “Whether or not we have plans to bring out a new entry in the Advance Wars series is a secret.”

In an interview with Official Nintendo MagazineIntelligent Systems, the developers of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, share their thoughts on the differences between the two series of turn-based strategy games.

“One of the main differences is whether you can build more units. In Advance Wars the main part of your army consists of weapons such as tanks and it’s possible to just build them one after another,” says project manager Masahiro Higuchi.

“However, the units in Fire Emblem are characters you can be emotionally invested in, they are important people that you can’t just build more of. At the same time there is also human drama between the characters, telling a spectacular story.”

Director Kouhei Maeda adds: “An obvious difference between Advance Wars and Fire Emblem is that one has tanks in a modern war setting, while the other has knights in a fantasy setting. But there is also a big difference in the gameplay with one being strategy and the other being role-playing strategy. In addition to the pure strategy elements, Fire Emblem adds role-playing elements with the characters on your side growing and gaining in experience as they fight.”

As for whether Intelligent Systems have any Advance Wars games in development, Maeda says: “Whether or not we have plans to bring out a new entry in the Advance Wars series is a secret.”

God, I remember Advanced. My friends used to sit around with those old wired GBA links and play AW2 for hours... So much fun. Battalion Wars was great too. Here's to hoping for a BW3 on Wii-U, then mabye I'll actually have a reason to use mine lol.

Half Life 3 confirmed.

It's such a shame these games don't sell well. I can't think of two franchises that are so consistently good.

Advance Wars is amazing. Please do make another, guy.

Awakening really seemed to invigorate the FE series, I think a good AW game could do the same, I've never played one, but I'm eager to try.

Wouldn't mind a new Advance Wars. Threaten them Nintendo!

I wish they'd go back to their original cartoony style that didn't take itself too seriously.

I played the last entry and didn't like how it went.

(Also some multiplayer might do this and Fire Emblem some good. One of the few games where I've actually wanted multiplayer)

I remember my big brother had advanced wars on the GBA, I believe there was a way to play multiplayer without having more than one system or copy. There was also the link cable and we could play with one copy... I think...? All I know is that my brothers and I used to play it (we only had one copy of the game) on road trips and it was really fun haha.
