Retro is great but they are nothing compared to what Rare meant to Nintendo in its hey-day. Naughty Dog has been pumping out hits for Sony since the mid-late 90's.

Retro has the potential to be the next Rare but there output hasnt been fast enought.

Between 1994-2002 I think Rare released at least one game a year, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Conkers Bad Fur Day and Star Fox Adventures.

On the other hand Retro has made 4 games in just over 10 years. Metroid Prime trilogy and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I think Retro needs to get a 2nd team started and release a game every other year just like Naughty Dog.

Rare made much more, actually. Besides the ones you mentioned, they also made 2 more DK Country games, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Mickey's Speedway, and some GameBoy games of their IP's, too. And most of their games were really very good, too. It's pretty crazy how much great stuff they consistently put out all the time.

The difference is that Rare was a huge, huge Studio (around 200 emplyees) in a time when games could be made by  20-30 individuals, they had 3 or 4 teams that worked on new games all the time + a handheld team that was responisble for the handheld spinoffs.

Retro is far smaller and a one team developer (although their output has ben nothing short of spectacular !)

Its amazing they were averaging about 2 games a year and most were good to great games. I know thats Iimpossoble these days with longer development times and other factors but if Retro can put out a game every 18-24 months then I think they have a chance at being the next Rare. Right now they put out a game roughly every 3 years so I think they need to create a 2nd team.

Rare made new IP's which filled Nintendos new IP gap because eventually at some point they just stop cold turkey with them and they gave them the genres they wouldnt make themselves. They need to make Retro do that or they aren't filling Rares shoes by a long shot. Retro are basically Nintendos errand boys to make quality nostalgia games. They could be great, but Nintendo wont let them.

"When it comes to impressing, doing the same thing has diminishing returns.  It doesn't matter if something is refined or improved if it is still very similar to the original.  The 'WOW' factor dies off.  If you had said Uncharted 3 you still wouldn't have a good point, but at least you would have gave a example that almost applied to yourself.  Uncharted 3 is a better game than Uncharted 2, it refined a lot of mechanics and set pieces and generally improved the game, especially for the multiplayer which is a major part of the two games.  But it was not as impressive as Uncharted 2, Uncharted 2 didn't just refine Uncharted 1, it came out leaps and bounds better, UC1 didn't even have multiplayer."

Just a HEADS UP.

If you want people to read what you wrote, use bold and underscore on the quoted parts so that it's actually readable. I really wanted to read your comment (I love when people quote each other with retorts).

But it's just impossible cause nothing stands out.

I really hope Retro gets a 2nd team. If they do that then they can make some new ips while continuing to resurrect older franchises.

I doubt Nintendo will let them, thats why they've been buying up third party exclusives and sealed the deal with buying Monolith. If Retro was larger they would just continue to make them create more sequels. A new IP would be nice, but it seems the older Nintendo execs get the more set in their ways they become. Luckily their games stay the same with characters but are approached differently in gameplay to keep each gen fresh.

Nintendo certainly should do more with them, but they haven't stopped them being great.

To be great all you need is to make great games, which Retro has done.

Retro has made great games but not enough to be stated in the same sentence as Naughty Dog who kept making new IP's which turned into hits. Unlike Rare, Naughty Dog is an example of Sonys vision for games. Retro is Nintendos sequel factory and good games or not thats all they'll be to me. Great yes, but great for a sequel company.

I agree with this for the most part but I think simply saying they make sequels is wrong, more like they bring back dead franchises (which technically are sequels but u know what I mean).
