Between 1994-2002 I think Rare released at least one game a year, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Conkers Bad Fur Day and Star Fox Adventures. On the other hand Retro has made 4 games in just over 10 years. Metroid Prime trilogy and Donkey Kong Country Returns. I think Retro needs to get a 2nd team started and release a game every other year just like Naughty Dog. |
The difference is that Rare was a huge, huge Studio (around 200 emplyees) in a time when games could be made by 20-30 individuals, they had 3 or 4 teams that worked on new games all the time + a handheld team that was responisble for the handheld spinoffs.
Retro is far smaller and a one team developer (although their output has ben nothing short of spectacular !)
