This means that PS4 is either going to require manual disk swaps as disks themselves are going to enforce the DRM for the installed game, or will be pirates wet dream.

Of course it will require disk swaps. I don't see how that's even a bad thing. Takes about 5 seconds.

"disk swapping" was one of the things PS3 had over 360 in the flame wars, so that this argument now seems to do a 180 makes me smile :D

Yeah, and now every One game has to be installed. Lol, the reversal is funny.

As will every retail PS4 game...

For me its not disk swapping that is the issue, its disks in general. For someone that lives in a trendy but small condo in Downtown Toronto, and wants to put together a seamles entertainment unit which is used for multiple purposes including gaming, there really is no room for piles of disks on the wall and on the ground while I am gaming.

Options are good and hopefully PS4 has an option to install a game and verify DRM online as I really don't plan to continue gaming using disks as the medium. To me disks are a distribution device and can pretty much go in the garbage once a game is installed on your profile and saved in the cloud...

Sounds like you might need to hop over to Steam.

Lol, yeah where do you think I've been for the last what...8 years?

I put up with my 360 cause thats where my gamer friends are at but last 3 games I bought for the 360 were Halo 4, Resident Evil 4 and Forza 4...at the time of their release.

On Steam however I buy like 2 games per week...

This is wonderful news. My main concern has been the whole always online check up thing. I was actually thinking about not getting one if it required that wack ass feature.

Oh, you meant disk swaps when intending to play a new game? That is hardly an issue

It is not an issue if there is no better option, but I can't see anyone with semi working internet saying:

"Yes I'd like to swap disks for the rest of my life every time i'd like to play a game and risk loosing the ability to play the game if they scratch. I don't want to authenticate once with Sony's server over the internet and be done with disk swapping forever"

Lol, I would love to see your source for the bolded.

Also, there is a big difference between swapping discs to play a completely different game and swapping discs to continue to play the same game.  Not that the latter is a HUGE deal.  I am glad, however, that Blu-ray has done away with that slight inconvenience.

Yes, but why would you want to?

I dont have a source but I have common sense. Do you know what 1080p resolution and textures loading time would be like off a 6x speed bluray drive? Without a game install PS4 will have 8gb of GDDR5 ram, being spoonfed with data 20 MB at a time. Yum!

Bluray by itself is an inconvenience in 2013 when it comes to gaming.

So Sony has said "No internet connection required" and "DRM is up to the publisher of each game"

Kind of answers all the questions I could ask Sony about the topic other than will Sony published games have DRM

So, this will mean the console functions without internet but still 3rd-parties can implement whatever they want with their games. DRM, no used games, require online...
I am curious to see how this will be implemented by, e.g, EA.

Yeah, but 3rd partys could also implement such a System on Wii U or even on PS3 and 360. Sony just has nothing to do with it. So even if some publishers are willing to do their own thing, I can just buy only games that work offline and I can still lend games to friends and so on. So until now I'm fine with Sonys solution. Though we'll still have to see what publishers will use their own systems. I think EA with Origin is pretty much a given, so I'll pass on EA games completely Next Gen. Not too much of a loss though.

But for me personally, it's definitely better than Microsofts approach. My console just isn't connected to the internet all the time as I only have internet via Cellular, which sucks hard. Ping is too high, online play is impossible and after reaching 30 GB traffic my connection becomes really really REALLY slow. That's why I never buy games online and connect my consoles only if there is a important update for some game. Other than that, I keep them off the net.

I also like to take my consoles to a friend, where we play all night long in the basement. Everythings cool down there, we got our own bar, a kitchen and everything. Just no internet. But Offline Mutliplayer is far more fun anyway if you ask me. We still don't know for sure what will happen with the PS4, but if it comes down to the same fashion as Xbox 1, my only choice next gen will be Wii U. In the end, I believe it's always best to let the consumers themselves choose whether they want to be online all the time or not. Give options to the people but don't force them to do anything. I want to use my console the way I like it, not the way the manufacturer likes to.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

1st para: As I said we will see how this will turn out by 3rd-parties. But yes, at least you have a choice.

2nd para: I feel sad for your circumstances. Mine are totally different and way better :) But yes, the approach is better by Sony.

3rd para:  Well, my friends have their own consoles but we are all above 27 in age and have a good job ;) I agree with you that at least customers should have choices because you can't expect the best conditions at every customer. But really, you always use your console just like the way the manufacturer does :) It is just how much freedom you will get in your jail.
