Nope, not at all. Maybe I am wrong, but I think our good guy Komikicki once wrote about the advantages of the Surface or was it the Windows Phone? Not sure. Anyways, if he thinks the iPad is the way to go, everyones free to buy whichever they prefer. XD

In Firefox (don't know about the rest) you just have to click on the message box you want to get rid of and hit delete. Can't be more simple than that.
And yes, massive quote trees needs to die.
I agree, I've even started reporting users with excessive quote trees (i.e. over 6 comments) in order to try and get the message across. They should be a top priority!
Highlighting and deleting works too.

Yes, there's many ways to delete the excess quotes but I think the one in the OP in the simplest and it prevents accidentally deleting parts you wanted to keep.
