Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Explains Xbox One Controller’s New Buttons

IGN

Microsoft has explained the names and functionality of those mysterious new buttons on Xbox One’s controller where Start and Back appeared on Xbox 360. According to a Microsoft representative, these buttons are named “Menu” and View.”

“The Menu button (on the right) will bring up context-specific menus which game and app developers can design to enhance the user experience,” Microsoft told IGN. “The Menu button could be used in scenarios such as bringing up in-game menus, showing video playback options, and accessing commands on the console’s user interface.”

The View button, meanwhile, “will change views or provide more information in games and apps. The function of the View button will be driven by developers. Possible uses of the View button include viewing a map during a role playing game, displaying a leaderboard in a first person shooter, and enhancing the navigation of the console’s user interface.”

Seems kind of like the old buttons.

They're just glorified start and select buttons.

Yay!!!

One thing Microsoft does got going with this machine is that the controller looks pretty awesome. I love Sony's dualshock controller but the look of the DS4 is very unappealing to me. Not that it really matters, as long as it feels good when it action.

I hate dat dpad. Why cant each direction be its own button?

It is an improvement over the previous one though. With the round thingy keeping them all together.

What I dislike the most from Nintendo and Micro controllers' design is that they look like toy stuff. I like the ones from Sony cuz they look more like part of an electronic device, a normal electronic hardware imput accessory.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

The controller seems great.

I knew those buttons would have good use. Good riddance to the start and back buttons they had no real purpose.

You do realize that the button face has nothing to do with what's beneath it.

The issue with the Xbox and Xbox 360 d-pad was that it was an 8-way directional pad.  If it had just been a 4-way d-pad, then no one would have had a problem with it.
