Forums - Nintendo - x86'd: How PC architecture could push Nintendo out of the next gen

people need to get their heads out of the sand.  The Wiiu isn't about cross platform next gen titles.  It's about exclusive nintendo games and 3rd party exclusive partnerships.

let me clear the air once and for all. the PPC vs. x86 topic (regardless of what forum it occurs on) is not a debate, its a flame war. and its so stupid as all hell that I can't believe these people can walk and blink at the same time. first off, compared as architectures the differences aren't all that striking initially, simply put they're two different ways to skin a cat. (though i recall hearing about early multi-threading issues on PPC but whats a development process without hiccups?) secondly ; all this fanaticism is fairly useless considering they must use whatever is available and what do the companies (Apple, MS, etc) that sell them to us use? they use what works. the people at MS and eventually apple determined x86 was more suited for the personal computing environment. however PPC has proven more scalable, thats why companies generally choose it when commissioning custom hardware. (e.g. xbox 360). I do not understand why people would defend a ****ing processor, the producers of our daily tech see this as a matter of viability rather than personal preference but somehow its a matter of which one's dick is bigger? if tomorrow xbox1 and/or ps4 switched everything and went with architecture XYZ, be honest, if it worked, who would give of ****? 2 types of people; programmers (that would likely have to mod some aspects of their application source to accommodate the new architecture) and trolls.

Difference between CPUs=design choices little else (whats the difference between an equivalent Chevy and a Chrysler engine really?)
companies use what works, we buy what works (for us) and then there are butthurt purists that love to muddy the waters with their filth.

It's basically the Gamecube then, except third-party exclusives will see a release later on tablets, as opposed to the PS2 =/

:O Nintendo is doomed!? unbelievable...

Blimey, another gaming journalist that doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. There's more to porting games between consoles than the CPU alone. Architecture plays a more important role than the CPU alone. Nintendo have surprisingly been forward thinking with their choice of architecture, it's going to be a great deal easier for developers to port between the Wii U/PS4/One than it currently is to port between the Wii U/PS3/360 due to the floating point work on the current gen titles being done by the GPU.

It didn't take long for console warriors, fanboys and a brutal media to take aim at Nintendo's Wii U.

Understatement of the year? We're not even half way yet either.

Anyway, I hope not. I planned on buying the system holiday season 2014. At least now I'll have time to wait and see.

After the Xbox disaster I a have far more faith in Nintendo now.

I disagree. It seems to me like the Wii U was largely designed specifically to attract cross-platform titles.

It has some similarities with the cube but i wouldn't say that it is comporable.

Actually, the Wii U is in worst position then the Gamecube. The GC was between the Xbox and the PS2 in terms of ability and power, the only things that held it back was the mini disc (capable 1.5 or 2 GB I think) media Nintendo chose that barely held half of what developers could store on a PS2 or Xbox disc which were full fledged DVDs (normally 5 GB standard). With the Wii U while it does use a different media, the main problem is that it will be the weaker of the 3 consoles and using architecture that major developers or those that love cutting edge tech will devote their time toward.

It could be to their benefit in regards to smaller developers/publishers that can't devote money to the higher end stuff but as we've seen with the Wii the major publishers are unlikely to accept the Nintendo's invite to slow things do to be more economical and will just not publish for the system despite the possible value. This is especially true given the botched launch and the notorious bad blood some of Nintendo's success and practices seems to inspire with some within and outside of the industry.

Nintendo has a shot to not be dead last but it is thin and getting thinner by the day they don't have better software available for their fans.
