No, the online once a day thing and preowned games issue will stop it from succeeding. We just need to make sure Microsoft make this clear to everyone. And all it seems to appeal to is Americans, as a British person where is some minor culture differences, that was blindingly obvious. It certainly won't appeal to the Japanese then and because of the online issue it won't be popular in the developing world either which is getting important for the gaming industry now

As a belgian person with major cultural differences, this seems even more obvious.

On the strength of TV and sports offerings? I doubt it.

I don't think people are especially excited by set top boxes, especially when they don't replace people's actual set top box.

Xbox brand was built almost entirely by "Core Gamers" and that is their foundation without that they will collapse. People really completely forgot pre-kinect Xbox

I never liked the term "hardcore" gamer because it's just too vague.

I think there are basically people who really enjoy the act of FOLLOWING video game news and discussing about it, in addition to just playing the games, and then people who play a few select "mainstream" games and aren't really that interested in talking about games on gaming forums.

I think the former might get really upset about the Xbox ONE and not value a lot of the features like the NFL partnership, but I'm just not sure how big they are compared to the rest of the people who enjoy playing CoD, Madden, Fifa only.

I think it's really hard to tell the situation Xbox is in right now. Basically, you're not going to get the truth until you do some market research and surveying of the people who aren't ranting about Xbox One on the internet. They're going to be the main buyers of this console.

Hardcore gamer isnt vague, it just means you're a hobbyist.

Hobbyist meaning? If someone plays 6+ hours a week on a game are they are "hardcore" gamer? Does it depend on what type of game they play (e.g. Farmville vs. CoD vs. Demon's Soul)?

casual games are created for people who like simple games, but they can still have depth in the gameplay. Super mario is an example of that. Farmville is an example and so is Angry Birds. Games with simple controls, but in the gameplay eventually comes some sort of depth.

Hobbyist is someone games as a hobby. They invest time into bettering themselves at the craft.

COD is not a casual game and by no means does casual mean you suck at gaming, it just means you don't invest that much time into gaming. You game loosely.

The only casuals who bought 360's were people with kids who wanted to play Dance Central. No one is going to be buying the One for all this entertainment nonsense.

Currently playing:

Bloodbath Paddy Wagon Ultra 9

This situation reminds me E3 when kinect (and 360 slim) was shown. Gamers on forums absolutely hated the entire conference and were upset about a number of things, including a pointless Usher performance (plus the whole thing looked like a circus). At that point 360 was doing really bad and was selling less than 80.000 systems a week (according to VGC).

However, after E3, sales of 360 skyrocketed (thanks to the slim) and got momentum. It kept selling well until kinect released which was a massive success and led to even better sales.

In other words, gamers have every reason to hate Xbone, but it might turn out to be an even bigger success for MS, mostly because of things that have nothing to do with gaming. MS is a company and what they care about is profit. Satisfying their customers does not appear to be their priority, but it's highly likely that it, nevertheless, won't come to bit them in the ass.

So frat boys that only play CoD and Madden on the weekends are "hardcore" gamers by your definition?

Because I don't think they really follow or mind some of the news trickling out about the Xbox One like the lack of backwards compatability or inability to play used games. They probably didn't even watch the presentation, but only heard about the Xbox One through news sites.

Depends on how much they game. If they are the stereotypical 360 bro gamers, they only buy COD, Gears, Halo, Madden and NBA 2k they are about moderate. This means they game but they don't game like a hobbyist. They game competitively.

Casual games=/=Casual Gamer

Casual Games= Games designed with simple controls to better gather a large audience. Usually these games have smaller budgets.

Casual Gamer= Someone who games sometimes or sometimes very little.
