Forums - Nintendo - R4 crushing software sales ?

Well, i don't think it's 90% of users, as stated earlier, i'd go with Fishys explanation.

But the important part is, that the DS has large enough userbase to support both, piracy and gamesales.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Piracy hurts, but these numbers are clearly pulled out of this guy's rear. If 90% of DS owners pirated, then apparently the other 10% buy about 500 games each.

Yeah , that should be true :? More and more sites report thgat this is bull***t ...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I only know that the R4 is awesome and that I still buy the best games.

there are chips other than the R4 and the M3 you know...

anyway, 90% is ridiculous. That would mean the absolute maximum any DS game could sell in America would be 2 million, but many games have gone well past that. Must be a misquote.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

Yes, but the rest either suck or just have a very minimal userbase (<1%).

Taken from the article's comments:

I can guarantee each and every one of you that 90% is outrageously exaggerated. Statistics show that the DS has 40 million-seller titles as of today (Feb. 1). In addition, there are 20 titles that have sold over TWO million. Given that America is the #1 largest gaming market (approximately 40-50% of gaming sales are in N.A. alone), we're looking at about 35-45% MINIMUM of DS gamers worldwide being cited as pirates. As we can assume that this wouldn't be ONLY a N.A. issue, we can assume that similar numbers can be reported worldwide.

We'll give the rest of the world the benefit of the doubt and say that, them included, the number comes to 70% of all DS gamers. Now, considering those numbers, that brings us to about 20 million DS users worldwide that DO NOT pirate.

Running calculations on DS software sales, that means that each and every one of those gamers would have to have purchased at least 10 games MINIMUM for software to have sold as much as it has, with them averaging somewhere around 25-30 per legitimate DS gamer.

In other words: BOGUS.

There are three solutions.

Maybe someone lied in an attempt to bring attention to piracy, to try to get the bigwigs to put forth greater effort in stopping it.

Maybe the author of the article was trying to generate traffic by citing such an outrageous claim (because it's certainly worked - there have been more hits on this article than probably most, if not every, other one, thanks to that claim).

Or, maybe, there was a ridiculous miscommunication somewhere, and the real statistic is that 90% of pirates use the R4.

I think each of those is equally possible.
