Forums - Gaming - The price point of consoles compared to other electronics.

I just noticed a double standard when it comes to buying electronics. I have no problem laying down $200+ and a contract for a phone, but don't really like a console starting at $500. It's the same for tablets if I wanted one, the price doesn't really bother me as long as I think it's worth it to me. Yet a console that I will most likely use for longer then a smartphone or tablet, I'm not really willing to pay $500 for. It prob is because games cost $60 too, and I don't really need to spend extra money on my phone. Does anyone else have this standard?

I cant see myself paying 300+ for any game system unless its something I really want which I cant see anytime in the future.

I'll be waiting for the Wii-U to go down in price and buy it (not saying official price but sales price such as black friday).

What about for other devices like tablets?

Not really. It's been a long time since I've had to consider the price of a piece of consumer electronics. (Basically, before I started working.) But my phone is almost a decade old, so I'm probably just weird like that.

I'm not planning to buy a tablet - unless someone else buys one for me (i.e. as a gift or something).

xD the point I'm making is, would you pay more then $400 or 500 for any other electronics?

It's because the console has no "value" to you. The value is in the games.

Paying $500 for a phone+data plan makes sense because you use what comes with the phone (phone, text, email, internet, media, photos) for no extra cost.

Yeah I can buy a $200-300 console, but paying over $100 for a phone is too much.

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

I'm perfectly fine buying laptops and stuff though

I haven't got a smart phone because I don't think they're worth it at all. With any electronics I buy I always consider the price, and for me, consoles are always worth it. I paid £320 for a PS3 when I was 12 and I don't regret that decision. I'm sure I'll be putting roughly the same amount towards a PS4 in a year or so.

I would never pay more than $100 for a phone. I would happily pay $400 for a good console and $200 for a good handheld. I have no desire to purchase a tablet.

games are entertainment, they are supposed to be for fun and not cost a fortune.

laptops, phones, etc. are tools we use today for stuff like college and work.
