We all know what this thread will end up like so let's get it over with. There's a fee to play used games. That alone is a game changer and will make many people go with a PS4. It's very anti-consumer and no wonder EA dropped online passes, they're going with offline passes now.

Are you certain that Sony won't implement the same ####?

And I'm not so sure it'll be a big dealbreaker in their largest market. Wait and see how it'll work out i guess.

I've actually changed my stance on this issue, this could be a HUGE positive as it would allow me to buy a game, install it to my console and then sell it off to Gamestop. It's a win for consumers, Gamestop and Microsoft. This is pure genius.

I'm assuming Gamestop will still accept trade-ins though. This new system will probably severely lower the market value of used Xbox One games. Here's hoping the fee is only about $10-$15.

Has it been confirmed that you can play games without the disc?

I don't know I thought I heard someone say it. Probably too good to be true. I got hyped up for nothing :(

Yes it has been confirmed (here by MS people).

Here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/407912/microsoft-confirms-pre-owned-fee-for-xbox-one/ (scroll down)

I love that option... My kids are always destroying my game discs.
Also rumors are that for gold family, you will be able to install it and play it with all family accounts from different consoles (I hope this is also true)

one thing during the architecture discussion the guy from turn 10 said they can move large amounts of data including rendering and ai through microsoft massive cloud computing infrastructure unleashing the processing power of the clould for xbox one.

now i can see for mmo's or only on line games how this could totally destroy the power of a static console

It's a useless feature for those of us with slow connections. Multiplatform games won't use it.

multiplayer would be a useless feature for youany way right?  so what i mention wouldnt be for you regardless.   as for multiplats notice the stuff i said all were only only scenarios so it depends on the multiplat dev

what are you talking about? I play multiplayer all the time. It is far from useless for me.

You need internet for multiplayer. If you can play multi-player games how the hell you gonna talk crap about slow connection for an MMO. Massively Multiplayer Online.

sooooooooo......  being you are capable of playing mp all the time, you dont think cloud computing can work for you?

The purpose would be for high-latency processing requests.  That is, for those requests that don't require lightning fast response times it would be used, however for other requirests that require faster response times it wouldn't be used.

The reason Microsoft is expanding the Xbox LIVE infrastructure 6 fold (I believe it was) is to provide one-hop access to that processing power.  So, technically speaking the latency to the cloud would be relatively low.  Despite that, yes, your Internet connection speed could be an issue but that's yet to be determined.

Jay,

Some games may require an Internet connected Xbox One. Xbox One will utilize off-system processing (the cloud) to expand the processing power of the system. This is a feature that will develop over time, but even some early games will likely take advantage of this feature.

I suspect there will be games that will fall into one of three categories, 1) games that do not require an online connection, 2) games that may require an online connection but if one does not exist can function in a limited capacity (smaller world, etc), or 3) games that require full-time connections.

Deeper into the Xbox One's life-cycle, the majority of games will likely require an Internet connection in order to provide a deeper, more compelling experience.

US internet connections are slow on average. Using cloud computing in games won't be viable anytime soon. If PS4 isn't able to do this, then you can bet that multiplatform game won't use this feature.

I can play MMOs just fine. MMOs don't use cloud computing. They don't require large bandwidth. LMFAO

Cloud Computing would require very fast internet connections for it to you know, work and not be laggy as fuck. I have a 1.5Mbps connection, its nowhere near enough for cloud gaming.

to register a game in order to play it, you need internet connection. Needs to be on the "Bad side" dont forget about that :D

Wait, so, to play a second hand game you must have an internet connection?

Which makes it so that an internet connection is required to play any (new) game?

oh shit I didn't realize that. Derp I'm slow.

Not sure about that.  Always connected is however false.  It is always kinnected though hence the rumors.  We will need more information on used games and installs for that.

Well, the only alternative to managing this DRM is to physically activate a key on the disc using a rewritable drive or special system that writes the ownership physically onto the disc.

The natural way would be to have it register online (perhaps in the background process) when you install, where that information is then stored at MS servers, and becomes cross checked against subsequent installs from that disc's serial.

Sounds exactly like steam except you can resell your games so count me very happy about this news.

Yeah, I like steam as well. Definitely not a problem for me.
