Forums - General - Why don't we talk about Oxygen and Air?

In 2005, David Foster Wallace gave a painfully honest commencement speech, urging listeners to live life mindfully and to have empathy for our fellow humans. Above is a ten-minute excerpt of the speech which you can read in its entirety http://www.marginalia.org/dfw_kenyon_commencement.html">here. Some choice excerpts:

Most days, if you’re aware enough to give yourself a choice, you can choose to look differently at this fat, dead-eyed, over-made-up lady who just screamed at her kid in the checkout line. Maybe she’s not usually like this. Maybe she’s been up three straight nights holding the hand of a husband who is dying of bone cancer. Or maybe this very lady is the low-wage clerk at the motor vehicle department, who just yesterday helped your spouse resolve a horrific, infuriating, red-tape problem through some small act of bureaucratic kindness. Of course, none of this is likely, but it’s also not impossible.

It just depends what you what to consider. If you’re automatically sure that you know what reality is, and you are operating on your default setting, then you, like me, probably won’t consider possibilities that aren’t annoying and miserable. But if you really learn how to pay attention, then you will know there are other options.

You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t.

I know most of the atmosphere is made out of nitrogen, so i guess it is the more popular gas, but i will stay loyal to oxygen, even if it's more of a niche now, there were the times when it was bigger, and it still a much better living platform then any of the other gases in my opinion.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

So Oxygen is undertrack now.

never bigger than Nitrogen and actually I think it's hard for Oxy to ever significantly improve again as nobody seems to think big with this/invest heavily in it's production anymore, actually it seems more fashionable to cut down on it

but whats really sad is carbondioxide, I mean it once really was king and nowadays people hype it up at for some lousy ppm gain - how the mighty have fallen

But this is exactly what my teacher always says :D pay attention to small things

that doesn't really matter, because oxygen still reacts better with everything else, especially with the indie gases! Nitrogen just tries to suffocate everything with it's overwhelming presence.

In my book, Nitrogen is a douce.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Nitrogen is arrogant. "Oxygen breathing doesn't occur until I say so".

I hope it fails.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

I like argon because it's indie and not many people have heard of it. I wish people would look over its low reactivity and see the great reviews. Oxygen has screwed over consumers one time too many and I'm never breathing from them again.

Oxygen is a channel for women. I don't watch it and I don't breathe it.
