Its not going to be big news at all. 360 has sold more software and made more money... thats most important. Plus, a price cut is possible which will make it harder for PS3 to catch up.

Dunno whether HW sales are comparable to software. No one really tracks software shipments. But every quarter we get hardware shipments reported and so anyone who's interested has been able to keep an eye on PS3 vs 360 through official company information. People will assume that when PS3 shipments as reported by Sony > Xbox360 shipments as reported by Microsoft then PS3's sold to consumers will be > 360s sold to consumers. With not much of a lag that is pretty much true. So the big news will be when Sony puts out a press release saying they've sold more PS3s than MS has sold 360s, and in a year's less time on the market.

Has Sony made such an announcement yet? Or are they going to announce it at E3 as part of building the hype around PS4?

I think the only way the VGChartz moment of PS3 overtaking 360 gets much publicity is if VGChartz tries to get it out to there itself.

No its not big news for several reasons:

- Firstly it took nearly the end of the current gen cycle to take over.
- Secondly with this gen sony was the worst one because its previous successor PS2 had about 157million units to now 77.3 million units. Thats a big drop whereas from xbox o xbox 360 there was huge gain in the market for MS this gen

- Thirdly Sony lost quite alot of exclusives that was only found on the ps2 in those days. you guys know which ones i am talking about.

- PS3 nearly made sony bankrupt , frozen assets, used up all the ps2 profit and hasn't made much profit compared to the xbox 360

- Multiplatform games majority of the time looked better on the xbox 360 compared to ps3. .

In mentioning above, even ps3 takes over , its not important because its a bit to late and it did not improve sale wise over its predecessor. it was successful to a certain extent but based on the other two predecessor the ps1 and ps2 is the worst console. As much as fanboys on either side would like their twist on this but in reality sony lost this gen whether people want to believe it or not. As they say haters gonna hate :). Remember Xbox 360 hasn't had a price drop for a very very very long time.All mS needs to do is drop it and ps3 won't take over but ms can't be stuffed as they are making alot of profit out of it.

At E3, Sony will probably mention becoming one of the best selling consoles of the generation with the PS3 and was the best selling console in 2012. That statement will be news on most gaming media sites.

I think Sony will go ahead and claim it regardless, like how MS claimed the 360 sold the most in 2011. The shipped numbers probably will beat 360.

OT: It might not be huge news because it's still going to be debated, shipped vs sold and all that jazz, I don't think VGC numbers would be used that much. Still, I'd say it's quite a big deal and will get a fair amount of attention, I think it deserves more attention than Wii Sports becoming the best selling game of all time.

Technically speaking MS doesn't know if PS3 is ahead in terms of shipments anyway so they probably wouldn't try to complain or make issue with such a claim. And Sony is most likely staying mum on the issue at least for the time being. As others have speculated, they'll probably make some comment about it at E3. In terms of the general media response, I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a hullabaloo made about VGC showing PS3 is ahead.

Depends how much PS fans have that PS2 blood (1st place) coursing through their veins.....how much they resent MS for making it so hard for them to catch up.

Essentially the bigger deal this becomes = more PS fans that just couldn't stand PS3 lifetime sales behind 360. A lot of possible pent up energy just waiting to release.

To anybody who reads this who also posts on YT console war vids.....see the reactions when it happens and tell me sales don't matter :P
