Forums - Gaming - What are your thoughts on Nintendo?

Software wise
Whether you love or hate their franchises * i love very few of them* i just can't get over that they never release any new AAA IP. While its true that i love some of their current games and am down for more, it would be amazing if they just threw in some new AAA IP into the mix even if it means buying some new talent.

Hardware wise
They are a joke in this category. Its almost like they don't want to work towards hiring the right people to build a home console that can support something that can really push and help their developers. While the 3DS may seem amazing that is only because its competition is dead and the problem is most apparent in the home consoles and will widen when the rest of the next gen systems release. Yes the wii was super successful, however to this day i believe motion gaming is a gimmick and it becomes even more apparent when the WIIU didn't even expand on it and even WII games don't use the motion plus.

Overall: They are my least favorite of the big three.

Nintendo has gone far away from what I think a hardware company should be. I would be very happy if they were only a software company. They took forever making a HD console. The Wii U comes right when the nextbox and PS4 are coming,  both of them are continuing my preference towards making every gen have substantially better visuals.

The handheld market has a lot of games that could be easily played on mobile. And, since most of their games are simple enough to do this (JRPGs mostly) excluding quality shooters, I am thinking they need to make software for mobile. I am all over the mobile potential.  I never was into buying what I perceive as over priced handheld games. Making the games cheaper on moblie platforms would be a benifit to all consumers, as they could be bought by more people rather than limiting the audience by having to own a very limited nintendo handheld that is mostly there for games only.

You quite underestimate the depth of handheld Nintendo games. The point to value retention is that they don't treat the games like throwaway 99 cent trash.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I like Ninty. I plan on buying a 3DS this holiday season and a WiiU the season after. Currently playing through Pokemon Diamond with black/white 1 and 2 to follow... Then finally Golden Sun Dark Dawn. My back-log for this gen is slowly getting smaller. YAY!

Nintendo is doing exactly the same things they always did..they didnt change any paths.. actions speak louder then words. and that is not a bad thing i mean every big nintendo game released is a masterpiece. they are giving us constantly something new be it software of existing franchises or hardware. nintendo is still king and I dont see why someone would say otherwise.

only negative is no new IPs because they rely to much on mario..

I disagee with you. When Nintendo first started making games they were fresh and revolutionary. But now that we have had Mario for the better part of 3 decades it seems like Nintendo seems content to keep falling back on Mario along with Zelda. Even though I'm more of a Sony/PC gamer I wish they would take some chances. I don't blame them for milking Mario for all but it would be nice to see some fresh ideas/IPs.

Love Nintendo and would leave gaming if they left.

I like Nintendo but I hate how they constantly rehash Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda. People complain about Activision releasing ONE COD game a year yet no one complains about Nintendo releasing 5-10 Mario games a year with all of them being the same as the games before them. I know those franchises make a lot of money but they should start making new ips and give these 3 a break.

best game developers out there with reliable hardware that does not need replacement

they are not scared to take risks with new innovative ways of playing games both control wise and in-game wise

while the WiiU is doing bad right now I am fully confidant that Nintendo will turn things around just like they did with 3DS

I'm struggling with this. For this year, we have:

3D Mario

Mario Kart

Mario Tennis

Mario: Minis on the move (eShop)

Mario and Luigi

And that's all the Mario I can think of for this year. That's far less than 10, and every game is using unique game mechanics in completely different genres.

I suppose we could go further and include Luigi's Mansion and the DLC for the Wii U 2D Mario game, but even then, we have 7 completely different genres merely set in the same world. Is that a bad thing? Sure, some of them could be just as good with a unique cast, and it'd be nice if there was. But Mario=Sales.

In addition, Microsoft and Sony are also going this way. They've just been around for a lot less time. You look at Gran Turismo, Halo, Uncharted, GoW, GoW etc. and these are all "rehashes" as well. Indeed, it could be argued that they have a lot less originality than the games mentioned above (with the exception of 2D Mario and Mario Kart, sadly). In 20 years time, if gaming still exsists in the same caliber as today, will we be saying the same about Microsoft and Sony? Why should we select Nintendo specifically when everyone does it?

I don't want to attack any of those games, for I love them all (mostly), so why do people need to constantly reinvent? And if we don't need to constantly reinvent, then why do people attack Nintendo for re-using their flagship character in a wide variety of genres?

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

While I see your point this "Mario games" are different genres: RPG, Platformer, Sports, Party, etc. Nintendo milks the character, not their genres.

Main Zelda games only come out every 5 years or so (Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were 6 years apart), so I don't understand why you think they rehash the franchise.

I can't believe you didn't mention your love for Animal Crossing!

That is a very good point, NintendoPie!  Though, I don't love it like I used to.  And not as much as 3D/Kart/Pikmin/F-Zero.
