| Playstationfan12 said: I like Nintendo but I hate how they constantly rehash Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda. People complain about Activision releasing ONE COD game a year yet no one complains about Nintendo releasing 5-10 Mario games a year with all of them being the same as the games before them. I know those franchises make a lot of money but they should start making new ips and give these 3 a break. |
I'm struggling with this. For this year, we have:
3D Mario
Mario Kart
Mario Tennis
Mario: Minis on the move (eShop)
Mario and Luigi
And that's all the Mario I can think of for this year. That's far less than 10, and every game is using unique game mechanics in completely different genres.
I suppose we could go further and include Luigi's Mansion and the DLC for the Wii U 2D Mario game, but even then, we have 7 completely different genres merely set in the same world. Is that a bad thing? Sure, some of them could be just as good with a unique cast, and it'd be nice if there was. But Mario=Sales.
In addition, Microsoft and Sony are also going this way. They've just been around for a lot less time. You look at Gran Turismo, Halo, Uncharted, GoW, GoW etc. and these are all "rehashes" as well. Indeed, it could be argued that they have a lot less originality than the games mentioned above (with the exception of 2D Mario and Mario Kart, sadly). In 20 years time, if gaming still exsists in the same caliber as today, will we be saying the same about Microsoft and Sony? Why should we select Nintendo specifically when everyone does it?
I don't want to attack any of those games, for I love them all (mostly), so why do people need to constantly reinvent? And if we don't need to constantly reinvent, then why do people attack Nintendo for re-using their flagship character in a wide variety of genres?
