Forums - Gaming - World of Warcraft Killed MMO's?

WoW didnt kill the MMO market but they reigned undisputed for a very long time. Other companies too way too long to respond to WoW and when they did it was far too late.

With that said, nowadays what happens is that the market is flooded with games. Decent games are free to play. This is killing the sub market that blizzard managed to corner for so long. They are all falling one by one. WoW will be the last but will fall aswell.

F2P and F2P/B2P hybrid models are the way of the future. Also, we need these games to cut on the boredom. Too much grinding. no one has time or patience for that anymore on the games market. Console games have evolved from that.

Did CoD kill shooters?

IMO - yes. I don't think I liked a single shooter released after CoD4 because of its gameplay...except maybe Bulletstorm.

I don't see how that means CoD killed shooters. Shooter is also a broad genre.

Still plenty of shooters on the market that aren't like CoD and sell quite well.

Many (most?) shooters after CoD4 copied a lot off the game, trying to replicate the success. Most failed...hard.

A lot of games took some ideas from CoD, but that doesn't mean many or most games we see are CoD clones.

Definitely not the cookie cutter approach we saw with WoW clones.

WoW is to MMOs what CoD is to FPS games.

The genre was great, then it released, it lowered the bar for skills needed to be 'great' at the game type and it met mass market success, since then other games of the genre and lowered the bar also or kept the bar high but not met with success.

What games kept the bar high but were not met with success?

Yeah? Tell you what, I definately wouldn't be able to tell you the name of even three "big" FPS released after COD4 which didn't contain either:

a) Regenerating health (blabla first used in Halo -which wouldn't even be correct- bla)

b) Imposed limit on the number of weapons and grenades you can carry

c) OHK scripted knifing (a knife used to be the weakest weapon in a game...)

d) Absolutely linear level design

Could you?

a) Halo was the first shooter I know of that used it. But I'm fine with that idea in linear games.

b) This is a non issue for me.

c) That's obviously done to keep the action fast paced. But I don't see many games using that other than CoD clones like BF and MoH.

d) Games were becoming more linear even before CoD. Consumers seem to prefer that and there has been a bigger focus on telling a story.

Where do we draw the line on linear? Is Borderlands, Far Cry 3, Dead Island, or Bioshock linear? Maybe those are the games for you.

Also, didn't you say you like Bulletstorm? It seems guilty of everything you mentioned.
