How easy is it to make an account on GAF? I love it when I see so many rumours with that little disclaimer at the end "feel free to permanently ban my account if this rumour proves to be false". Must be thousands of banned accounts.

Hardest forum I know of to get a membership. You can't register with a free email address and it takes months, sometimes over a year for your account to get approved.

Why is that?

because of the many idiots that want an account there to just spam the forums. there are a lot of users who get banned shortly after their official registration and i am not surprised they are :)

So what do they do to check that you'll be a "quality" poster?

They don't really "do" anything.

They just slowly approve memberships and each new member gets a trial "junior member" period where they can do anything other users can do but if they get banned during that time for even the smallest offense, they're permabanned.

This is actually kinda sad.

I'll tell you why this "rumor" is false.....ESRAM. Leaks point to the console having ESRAM to make up for the low bandwidth of DDR3. You can't just go from DDR3 to GDDR5 without completely redesigning the console.

This is not really a proof. This can be wrong as well as DDR3. Either both things are right or both things are wrong.

It comes from a reputable source, the same one who game us PS4 specs.

Still saying GDDR5 is out because of ESRAM is wrong. Either both DDR3 *and* ESRAM is wrong or both are true.

Why would you use ESRAM if you have 8GB of GDDR5? It's completely unnecessary.

The presence of ESRAM would in a way confirm that the console is using DDR3. The whole point of ESRAM is to increase bandwidth, something that would be completely unnecessary combined with GDDR5. Besides, we've all seen what's happening with Xbox 360, it is very app-focused and DDR3 is best suited for that.

You are still not getting what I wanted to say but it's ok now. We will have to wait another 7 days, arguing is useless by now.

Btw, if NextBox is app-focused we will also have to see. MS just chose DDR3 for a reason - this can be apps or they actually thought it would fit to the requirements they engineered for their next gaming-box. Perhaps we will never know. And you don't have to repeat over and over that ESRAM is not needed if you use GDDR5 - it would be useless in PS4 but this doesn't mean you will never need it with a system with GDDR5-RAM. It all depends on how the *system* as a whole works.

Why would you need ESRAM in a system with such high bandwidth?

@bold
GDDR5 is best suited for games. If Sony, in their current financial state, can manage to put 8GB of GDDR5, I don't see why MS couldn't. So obviously cost isn't an issue here. Maybe it depends on how talented their engineers are or they think DDR3 is best suited for their plans.(app-focused OS like Windows 8)

What?  Cost is an issue.  Expensive RAM would raise the cost of the console (and if supply constrained, hinder availability).  Most likely Sony is passing some of that cost increase, if not all of it, to consumers.

Also, what does talent of engineers have to do with type of RAM?  Having a mix of DDR3 + ESRAM would clearly be in an effort to lower cost to keep the console more affordable, which is actually MORE difficult to design hardware around (and make games for most likely, not a good thing).  It's not like the answer is black and white either - one choice save you BOM cost, one gives you max bandwidth.

At the end of the day, it would mean that Sony and Microsoft have different strategies regarding cost vs. performance.  I hope these companies both throw 16Gigs and a Titan graphics card in just so all of you cry like a bitch when the console is over a grand.

mega facepalm. the company's financial state has nothing to do with that. this is about final price for the consumer.

We had a thread here that had the rumored specs at the begining of year and the next Xbox had always been rumored to have 8GB of RAM (Though DRAM not DDR)

What?  DDR-RAM is DRAM.

Not unless he's living 10 years in the past lol.  DDR3 is the 3rd iteration of "DDR".  DDR 1, 2, and now 3. ... Alas, I'm guessing I missed a joke here so apologize if you were not being serious.
