Forums - Gaming - Activision Says Next Xbox And PlayStation 4 Could Face The Same Challenges As Wii U

We dosn't know the price of ps4 we don't know the full line up of ps4 we don`t know the strength of the competition between the big 3 if ps4 will have dificulty it will not happen because of smartphone and tablet.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

I also expect similar. Me and bananaking and i believe a few others has already talked about this through PM's. I expect them to have a steadier software release schedule though so I think they can do a little better throughout the year though. I just think for a lot of people there isnt going to be a need to upgrade for a while.

PS4/720 will probably have their growing pains too, but I think they are also going to be consoles that are probably aiming to have 7-8 year hardware cycles minimum as well.

So I don't think there would be a big sense of panic either. It doesn't sound like either one is planning to take big hardware losses either.

The other thing is Nintendo fans tend to buy a Nintendo console and gravtiate mostly to Nintendo games.

But for the PS4/720, Madden NFL or Call of Duty are basically the equivalent to "Mario" on those consoles, so third parties will likely be happier with the software sales. Third party software dominates Sony/MS consoles, Sony/MS 1st party software is basically just there as filler.

His statement seems right to me. The dismal global economy wil be to blame for this.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Yeah, I saw this interview a couple of days ago and I completely agree. They probably won't fare as badly as WiiU did post-holidays simply because there will be a much more steady stream of software, but many analysts (for what it's worth) have postulated that this coming gen will be the slowest adoption rate the industry has ever seen.

I don't think that the tablet or smartphone markets eat into the demographic that the PS3 and 360 have targeted. These people have smartphones already and maybe tablets, but they still buy the next CoD that comes out.

Fundamentally, it makes no sense for smartphones and tablets to steal share from the 20-30 male market. The whole point of those two devices is portability. You kill time while you're waiting for class to start or for the bus to come by playing 5 minutes of Angry Birds or checking e-mail.

You don't spend 2-3+ hours on the weekends playing Angry Birds or checking e-mail on your smartphone or tablet. That's not to say you don't touch those portable devices at home, but at worst, they're substituting laptops and desktops for internet surfing purposes.

Not to replace gaming.

Again, just look at the fundamental attributes of home consoles and smartphones/tablets, and the needs they satisfy. They don't overlap in a major way to substitute one another.

Now, if we're talking about people substituting 3DS's/Vita's with smartphones/tablets, or "casual" gamers seeing smartphones/tablets as an adequate substitute for Guitar Hero or Wii Fit, yeah, I'm on board with you guys.

lol, that would be terrible for them. nintendo already have a year headstart, if those consoles have a 7-8 year cycle, wii u 2 could come out and have 2-3 years of headstart.

Once the next gen software (system sellers) moves onto the PS4/720, they'll sell fine.. like when; Call of Duty, FIFA, Halo, Gran Turismo etc release.

Nintendo really isn't competing with MS/Sony anymore in a direct way I don't think.

I doubt if you went into the store on launch day and talked to PS4/720 buyers that any of them would consider a Wii U over those consoles. Those people have their tastes and Nintendo does not cater to them nearly enough.

Nintendo will be continually chasing the dragon of the "family friendly console", which relies more on the "parents playing with their kids" concept.

There was nothing stopping Nintendo from releasing a Wii successor in 2010 or 2011 either, but they barely even made a 2012 launch.

PS4/720 will be around for 7-8 years *minimum*, probably more like 10 years. The budget you're going to need to create games that go beyond PS4/720 complexity will be like a movie budget, I think most devs are just fine with PS4/720 for a long time.

I think people underestimate the power of people who play games casualy. We see the term casual and think of Wii Fit or Nintendogs or Just Dance, etc. but really it just means people who play games less than so called 'hardcore' gamers. It usually means people who play a certain game because their friends or family or coworkers do.

A large portion of the users of the PS3 and XBox360, I believe, fit into this mold - but instead of the games I listed they used to play games like Guitar Hero/Rock Band and now play games like Call of Duty. They are just as susceptible to being lured away by things like smartphones and tablets as Nintendo's customers, those things just have to become 'cool' and they will flock to them.

I see the recent mediocre releases of fairly large PS360 games (ie. Gears of War, God of War, etc. and even COD which is on track to do less than the last iteration) and that these games did very little to boost week-to-week hardware sales and I believe that is an indicator that mainly the same customers are continuing to buy games as opposed to additonal customers. The lower numbers could indicate that those customer's numbers are shrinking and while a new gen should hopefully re-spark that 'coolness' factor, but it could just as easily miss or underperform and we could see more of the studio closings and downsizing, etc. that we have been seeing over the last few years.

The market will adjust to those factors however, if traditional gaming becomes less popular there will be less game makers and games - which could be a good think (quality over quantity), conversely I also see a bubble burst of sorts on the App Store/Android horizon so those same customers could come flocking back under the right circumstances.
