It's about the odds of double dipping. I own it on PS2, PS3, and PS4. The people who are targeted by these releases are people who missed it completely or big time fans of the series. Considering backlog culture, I wouldn't be surprised if people own it on PC/PS4 but buy it again on Switch to have it on a handheld.
There's definitely some overlap. Final Fantasy has a very targeted market and that market is most likely to own a Playstation platform. It's about convincing those who haven't played a mainline FF in a while to give it a shot. |
*raises hand* um...does owning it on PS2 but never playing it count as backlog culture? I'm debating if I should dig out my PS2 and play it there before I buy it on Switch so I can have a proper experience. Up until now I've only played portions of it at friends houses as a kid, and watched just enough let's plays to get the context of certain references. Bought the PS2 version in the twilight of the PS3 era, alongside some PS2 Persona games, intending to take the PS2 from storage and play them all, but never even got through the Persona games before the PS2 started collecting dust again and I moved on to more recent games. I think this latest release is likely targeted at people like myself, to force the game to the top of my backlog again.
