I don't plan on buying it as of now. Last Pokemon I played all the way through was Silver. I did play a little bit of Platinum and it only took a few hours to realize I didn't want to play another roster update.

Not only storing but transfering.
In the past you needed a link cable another copy of the game and another system if you wanted to carry Pokemon with you anew into a new file. (They cant have 2 because of save state trade abuses)
Now you can store bank them, restart and them pull em out in case you want the other starters.
There are a lot of changes that arent so well explained like special splits and such like EVs that haven't been taught in game at all. I think Gamefreak was trying to not overwhelm the kiddies but then it creates people that levae the game thinking that they've done everything there is.
X/Y looking to change that it seems with Super training and the fact that we can see the stat changes. They're being a lot more transparent that these hidden mechanics exist.
