Yeah, you really don't know.
The same game with 20 different pokemon that you can get very easy nowadays thanks to online trading. you don't even need a friend as in the past lol

I think there was an analysis of it somewhere last year or 2014 that said about 11% (which isnt close to half) of the total purchases are buying both games but out of those people majority of them only buy 2 copies (or more) because of siblings/etc. Im basically one of them that buys each installment. One for myself and one from my brother.
If he didnt play pokemon anymore i wouldnt be buying 2 copies. Also if it were true with this whole "everyone buys 2 copies of pokemon each" then sales for the past individual games wouldnt be so high. A good example of this was comparing BW2 vs Emerald/Platinum (8mil vs 6.5mil/7.5mil)
