Well, for one thing, there was that guy from Rare awhile ago who said they were making a new Killer Instinct when Microsoft pulled them off it to make the Avatars and Kinect junk. So there is precedent.

| theprof00 said: It's a simple answer. Because they don't need to. There are more lucrative audiences than the traditionally core gamer, so why waste time developing when the average Joe only really needs netflix and various apps? Nintendo and MS both understand this. Hence why when their consoles were doing really well, they stopped making core games. |
Exactly. Their focus has been away from core gaming for a long time now. It's been on Kinect and "everything else" for the last 4 years.

Actually that was Kinect and Windows Phone, and it was for an entire 12 month period.
If Microsoft sold 24m Kinect, at $150 a pop, with $100 profit, then it made $2.4b. If it sold 24m Kinect, at any price, with $50 profit, then it made $1.2b.
I'm sure, and I could be wrong, but they could have found somewhere in that $1.2b, $500m. That still would have left $600m in the coffers.
So they spent $500m on marketing, but they made $600m in profit.

Lets not forget the whole problem of Microsoft not being in possession of the KI name and mark. For which they had to sit down with Fox and hash out the details, which only happened recently.
So, game on.

I know what u mean, but one simple thig - MS make this 2.4 bln for Kinect, OK, well done, but where are games ? The whole complain is not about multimedia, but the lack games ! Cmon MS, push ur technology and services in Nextbox, no prob, but give us AAA titles like Sony did in past, current and future years.
Now is the best moment for MS. PS4 games showed at PS Meeting were not nuclear bomb at all, so they can show many amazing games and turn the things right way.
I dont care about social, about multimedia, I care only about games. Make games and I will not say a single one bad word.
Why Vita and Wii U selling so bad ? No gaemz my bro.Same happens to 360 in a few past years ( only Halo 4 ). Compare line up for 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360.
Do u remeber ,, PS3 has no games " gif ? No one used it for years.

I've just seen a lot of comments about the split in focus on Nextbox and I don't see it as having 1 or the other. Do the same people who normally work on games have to work on apps and streaming? How is this work divided? Because honestly I don't see one effecting the other. If all of their first party studios are making Kinect that's 1 thing but Xbox could easily do first party AND multimedia despite what has happened that last couple years. Same goes for PS4. Any reason this couldn't happen? |
I think they have somewhat of a point, if you look at the Xbox 360 the 2nd half of it's life has had a shortage of exclusives to coincide with Kinect, but also coinciding with Microsoft's general apparent direction in terms of media. We're not hearing much games talk with the Nextbox. Having said that, this is largely an impression that is given and a feeling, certainly no factual go to source to prove the point with ease but it does seem that way imo.
I'll reserve judgement until release because it really is just a feeling at the moment.

the 500 million USD marketing budget for Kinect is an urban myth that was busted years ago, but the gaming community does not want to learn.
MS 1st party will be big next gen. Really big. Have a look:

How could they've been on Kinect for the last 4 years, if it was released on November of 2010?

Because MS has blinders on. Much like the switch from core to casual. They lost sight of what they originally planed the xbox to be, and while doing so their core franchises dropped off in favor of pushing kinect. I don't expect it to be any different with their media. Putting too much resources into it and forgetter what it should do in the first place. That’s why.
