Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo not holding traditional E3 press conference this year?

As far as Nintendo's core market (their fans) ND is more than adequate and allows them 100% control of the message.

As far as 'core' gamers go, or PC/Sony/MS gamers anyway - it's obvious by now that WiiU isn't going to sway them no matter what they show (unless they are also Nintendo fans).

What's really disturbing is E3 is one of the only industry events that makes it into the main stream press. If Nintendo would rather communicate with it's fans via ND, that's fine. If they ignore Sony/MS fans, fine again. But not having a press conference at E3 is Nintendo basically giving up on gaining any casual gamer support. It suggests very strongly that Nintendo themselves do not believe Wii Fit U and Wii Party U will attract a broader market otherwise those two and Mario Kart would be 60-70% of their E3 presentation. And without the broader market that boosted both DS and Wii, WiiU's sales will be quite limited no matter how many Marios and Zeldas they put on it.

This is great news if you're a Nintendo fans as it's suggests Nintendo's only strategy left will be to milk it's fans of all their money by giving them all the games they want, at least until a successor to WiiU can be brought out.

Maybe they, like so many people apparently do, also believe the audience you refer to is long gone and has moved on.

Basically, everyone is getting exactly what they want out of E3 and directly from Nintendo. Gamers get game announcements and trailers without all of the sales and marketing fluff. Press gets hands-on time without the limitations of the booth setup or the long lines. Businessmen get shown games to see what is coming, but mostly talk about marketing and sales strategy. In their press release about the subject, they mentioned having several Nintendo Directs leading up to E3. I'm guessing a 3DS one to talk more about release dates, show off more LttP2, and Miiverse coming to the system, possibly more XL colors. Then, a Wii U one showing trailers for Mario, Mario Kart, WWHD, Bayo 2, SMT x FE, X, Pikmin 3, Smash Bros and finally Retro's game. Maybe some release windows for those (but they'll all be out before the FY is done, aside from Smash most likely). It's going to be massive. They might even have a separate 3rd party/eShop/Miiverse direct just so they can focus on their first party titles in one sitting.

I could even see Nintendo going the extra mile and putting E3 demos on the eShop for people at home because of the way Iwata worded this quote, "we are continuing to investigate ways to deliver information about our games directly to our home audience around the time of E3." We know there will be Directs and videos from those Directs, so why wouldn't he have just said that? It's VERY optimistic, so I won't exactly get my hopes up over it.

The games they plan on talking about are all coming out this FY according to Nintendo. The teams working on games have mostly been silent in the past 2-3 years aside from 3DS titles. I don't think Nintendo would allocate an entire EAD group to a handheld title that will need less work overall. Many of those 3DS titles have been made in conjunction with smaller studios like Brownie Brown and Grezzo. We won't get another awkward Skyward Sword demo that doesn't exactly work...these games are basically in Nintendo's "polish" phase or are very close. I think they will bundle Mario Kart as it will move systems like crazy, most likely with the Deluxe because the incentives there will lead to more people buying other things on the eShop.

The one thing I'll say is that they need announce the ND's earlier in order to tease and hype them. If they intend to replace E3 with these, they NEED to build hype. This whole.....announce it less than 24 hours in advance thing isn't going to fly. I don't mind the pleasant surprise, but they definitely need to do work.

Another thing that bugs me is the silence on things like W101, it's still a Q2 release after all. Then you've got things for casuals like Wii Fit U and Wii U Party (which I feel should be changed to Mii Party....people love Mii's). I'm not sure if throwing those out there with the likes of Mario and Mario Kart would be the smartest thing. It would be smart to at least release Wii Fit for the summer because people are trying to stay in shape so they can look good at the beach or whatever.

Yet again, Nintendo doesn't do anything that anyone expects them to do. We'll see how it pans out for them.

This sounds about right, which doesnt seem like such a bad idea to me

You do know that the press is still meeting directly with Nintendo and getting hands-on demos right? FAR better than a canned press conference that has to cover everything to everybody. Having the mainstream press in the room, getting their hands on games before the show even opens is vastly superior to showing them a bunch of trailers and saying "Doesn't that look cool?" and making them wait until the next day to fight through lines and with time limits to play the games.

If you ask any casual gamer if they know whatE3 is, they will say "No, what?". Then when you tell them that it is where MS, Sony and Nintendo talk about their new games and consoles coming up this year, they will say one of two things. "Oh....it's a gaming thing" or "Hey! I love my Wii!" (or what have you). E3 is for gamers and the press, both of which are getting more intimate presentations from Nintendo directly. It is not for the casual audience, which is why every E3 press conference for as long as I can remember has sucked, because they are trying to cater to the causal audience that doesn't even know the thing exists.

im sorry even the most die hard nintendo fan cannot agree to this, a nintendo direct isnt the same as an E3 conference.

theres many other events in the year where nintendo can make announcements like TGS etc this is just a crass move and cannot be suger coated over.

sorry you just cannot agree to this, poor decision nintendo. if sony took a step like this the press would close curtains on sony, i dont understand

GIANT FACEPALM. NINTENDO IS ATENDING E3, ONLY NOT WITH A BIG PRESS CONFERENCE AS USUAL. AND THERE WILL BE NINTENDO DIRECTS. basically the public still gets all the game information they'd get anyway. it's amazing how people ran out of excuses and are now complaining about the way nintendo reveals games.

The problem with this is the public at large doesn't know about ND, gamers do.

Since when does E3 reach casuals? its always been a gamer thing. 3ds xl announcment on the direct got articles from cnn, ign, abc, gamespot, ect.. THe news always gets out on those sites. Pokemon x and y got about 3 and half million views on youtube and was on the front page of youtube. You are overrating e3's importance

I think the main reason that this bothers me though is just that I don't like how it looks at a visceral level.

You hear all this shit talk about the Wii U not even counting as a next-gen console, and that it doesn't deserve to be talked about on the same terms as the PS4 and the 720. Yet at the first E3 in which those two will be featured, Nintendo is scaling back their presence. It comes off like a concession that it doesn't deserve to be on the same stage, which plays into the shrill bleating of the doomsayers.

I wanted to see Nintendo do a conference because I wanted them to fight back against the shit-talk head on. Showcase a slate of solid heavy hitters on stage as proof that the system is worth buying just like the other two next gen consoles, in the most visible way possible. Small, closed pressers and floor shows simply don't have that same kind of impact to me.

The key thing to remember is that the haters are full of shit (won't say the naysayers as a whole as there are legitimate concerns with the console still). Nintendo haters are a rare breed of bullshitter, in my experience, and you can never give their opinions legitimacy.

Since the media outside of gaming gets involved. E3 is the biggest conference of the year for videogames of all the worldwide conferences and is televised on Spike TV in the United States.
