Parents are idiots, can't take care of their children in a timely fashion, and then get upset and point the blame elsewhere when trouble hits.

Pathetic.

Actually, the parents did take responsibility by offering to volunteer at the school in lieu of the detention as a punishment for their lack of punctuality.  Their problem is the shcool is still punishing the child instead.

Oh. Where does the article say that? I missed it. If the parents were willing to take the punishment instead, since it was their fault, then yeah I would have preferred the school just let them do that. Rules are rules, though, and they apparently signed off on the papers in the beginning of the year. Sucks, but oh well.

I do disagree with the overall sentiment of the article that no punishment should be given, or all kids would show up late for school...

Says it in the middle of the article.

I do agree that the parents did sign off so the punishment should be enforced but I think the point of this article is to note how inane the policy is itself.   Bringing awareness isn't about getting the little girl out of the punishment but generating pressure to get the policy changed.

its ran by the government, so it fails.

So you're saying kids shouldn't be punished for being late to school until they're in what grade? Or do you think kids should never be punished for being late to school?

No, I'm saying that's the wrong punishment.  And the fact the parents are willing to take the punishment htemselves should be considered by the school.   It was the parents fault...why not punish the parents rather than the child?

And I agree with Aikohualda.   As a parent of 2 kids who go to different schools that start at different times, it's just not possible to ensure perfect punctuality every single day.  And that's all on me, not my kids.

What is the problem? A kid has to stay in detention for being tardy, granted, it's the parent's fault.

Where is the child suffering here? Ooooh how painful it must be for her to sit down and do nothing for a while. Truly, this is injustice and muh rights. In all honesty, they're overreacting. I read the entire article and I don't see any injustice or abuse of power or whatever. Other than the parents missing some work hours or schedule conflicts, it is really nothing to get our panties in a bunch. The school is being strict, as schools should be. Plus, the parents were required to sign off on the policy, right? Yes, we all make mistakes and we are human beings but life is fully of consequences, even for the smallest of things.

Lol...you guys actually went to detention...I blew that off and dared them to try and say shit to me

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Getting punished for not doing anything wrong is what's wrong here.

Lol at the people justifying 'punishing' a 6 year old, who has no concept of timely responsibility at their respective age. The punishment, is utterly retarded and has no positive effect. Which is why it's retarded. I think 6th grade is a reasonable age to force time constraints on children.

Before that point, most of these students are nurtured and controlled by their teachers entirely and only can be late by their parents tardiness. Middle school is generally where kids have different classes with a variety of specialties that they are responsible for maintaining a locker and traveling from classroom to classroom. That is where 'punctuality' punishments should be given.
