Tablets are now good enough for all life/entertainment uses that formerly needed a laptop. Serious work and long-session gaming will still be done on a PC.

Think of it in terms of devices that fulfill jobs for the customer rather than something winning and something losing.

Haven't consoles as dedicated gaming platforms supplanted PCs for long-term gaming needs?  As for serious work, as far as an office goes, I can see it.  But personal use?  What do people need now for serious work, outside of something that can run an office package?

Windows 8 has the potential to do it. If Business realize that it gives them the convenience of a tablet and all the productivity of a PC. It does it all. MS just needs to get businesses on board and it will sky rocket.

We may see the end of the PC tower at home in favor of Windows 8 Pro tablets that dock at home for large screen and full keyboard and mouse along with external drives and what not.

That is a PC, it's just able to be removed from a dock and taken to work and vacation. That's the future of PCs. People just haven't realized it yet and still think their iPad is better than a real PC even though it can't even do half the stuff.

There is nothing about consoles in this thread. The kind of gaming that is done on a PC now cannot be supplanted by tablets is my point.

What people need for 'serious work' is something with the ability to manage lots of files and inputs, multitask, and it be comfortable for them to spend 2+ hours in front of it. Not just office, but graphic design, sound engineering, programming, and personal finance.

Tablets will take over but pcs wont die anytime soon.
Tablets are great i use mine more then my desktop.
But for some things the pc is better then tablets.

CD-Roms are the only things keeping PC's going at this point. As digital downloads become the in thing with the mass audience casual gaming and tablet purchases will increase. The only thing that can save PC's after that are PC's without disc drives like minibooks.

A tablet is based on its design, not OS.

Your difference is more like "netbook" vs "laptop".

However, your logic of one OS winning out to other is flawed too as iOS, Android, and Win8 are all converging on the same basic idea. Notice MS is moving to a digital store and pushing software there. I'll all be various OSs with their own proprietary stores and no disc drives eventually.

Tablets will replace everyone's PCs as the design just makes more sense and voice dictation, touch and virtual keyboards will permanently replace the need for a kb/ms.

The path is clear, the time frame is not. Everyone bitches about ChromeOS not being enough or crappy, yet they fail to realize that is all people want/need in most cases and that is where the industry is moving. Network/server based vs client based.

Just look at WiiU and PS4. WiiU is almost entirely web based services. Its the reason its OS is slow and requires refinement. PS4 is largely being designed with Gaikai services and streaming in mind. Vita is being positioned as that streaming device and essentially an accessory to PS4. MS will do the same.

I know I may never build another PC. I like the laptop design, so I'll likely just go with Chromebooks. My home use requires nothing Windows or Mac would allow that ChromeOS cannot. Thus $250 laptop is >>>>>>> to WinMac anything.

However, if Win/Mac had a $250 hybrid, I'd get that as I'd want to have the choice of tablet or laptop design. Maybe, ChromeOS or Android will do that first.

Where did you pull those ideas out of my post? One OS winning? Though true, tablets are actually a type of computer, a laptop with a screen on it instead of attached with a hinge, getting rid of the keyboard in favor of touch. Now attached keyboard covers are the solution to that elimination, while keeping the other. The biggest trespass of the creation of these devices over the laptop which was the original portable computer, is the restricted proprietary OS that only operates applications. That has changed though and hardware power has expanded to compete with laptops.
