Forums - Nintendo - Story-wise, where does Metroid go from here?

I believe that Metroid has the largest potential of all Nintendo's big IP's to really bridge that gap between Nintendo and the "core" player. It can be mature and awesome without relying on stupid tropes that other AAA games get caught up in. I just hope that Nintendo someday realizes this and gives us something truly incredible in the Metroid series. Something that takes it to a new level of artfulness and storytelling without compromising what makes Metroid great. They just need to forget about making the game accessible to my five-year-old nephew and my grandma and focus on giving us an awesome game.

So really, I don't even care where the story goes, as long as it doesn't just keep repeating a la Zelda. But I'm sincerely scared that Other M taught them the wrong lesson.

Here is what needs to happen with Metroid. They need to present the story like it was presented in the Prime games. Minimal story, but through exploration, you can really flesh out the world. Story doesn't need to be a focus. The lore of the world however needs to be interesting. Make it so the lore reads itself to you so you don't have to scroll through walls of text to get the interesting info.

Then, revert the series back to it's roots. Exploration, has and always will be the defining aspect of great Metroid games. Prime, Super, and Prime 2 all had exploration. Other M, and fusion didn't (connection?).

I say, really try new stuff, a "reboot" isn't needed. I would argue that Prime is essentially the franchises reboot that build the foundation on which the rest of Metroid games should be built. It doesn't have to be first person (I'd prefer it) but it should focus on exploration.

Put out a 2D Super Metroid esque game on 3DS, and Prime-esque game on Wii U, and the franchise will be set for rebirth.

Theoretically we still have to see Metroid Prime 4, but after that, I'm thinking of a reboot.

Exactly how it should reboot is another matter entirely... I'd like a story with lots of depth and consistency, but I get the feeling most Nintendo fans are averse to that.

I don't know how you "reboot" something that didn't have much of a story in the first place. So I say stick with Metroids, and Mother Brain and all will be well. Trying to do too much and we know how that turns out.

With that said, I think the next Metroid should take a page out of the Bioshock book i.e. create the world or the unique atmosphere and let Samus run wild. Sort of like what they did with Echos, which was awesome. Then build the story around that world.

Personally I would like if they go to Mother Brain's home planet - if it exists in the Metroid lore.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

A game after Fusion. Less connection with the past games, the better. No Ridley, no Mother Brain. All new enemies, only metroids at the last levels and being hard to defeat, meaning a real threat for Samus.

No different beams like Prime and more upgrades like Super Metroid. Almost zero story, focus on exploration.

Exposition in Metroid games makes noname

Bad juju happens on mysterious planet. Bounty hunter arrives, kicks ass, takes names, gets fun toys, slays evil, leaves. Maybe strips to bikini later, dunno. Lines of dialogue spoken = 0. noname

(In case I'm being too subtle, this is my innocuous way of saying I'm indifferent to the continuity, and firmly believe that less is more in the Metroid universe. Subtle, huh?)

That could make Khuutra return. To tell us about the misplaced objectification of Samus Aran.

Its not the DmC/Tomb Raider style reboot but more of a soft reboot(Sonic Adventure) just done to open up possibilities. Wiping out Metroids and fusion have really limited what can be story wise with the IP.

Sonic Adventure was a horrible thing. Putting Sonic among a world of humans (which was topped off by Tails saving the President in SA2) was so idiotic that it feels hard to feel sorry for Sega's demise as a console manufacturer.

As for Metroid 5, it can't be that much of a challenge to explain that scientists found a way to fix Samus. It would also double as explanation why she has to start with barebones equipment yet again. Regarding metroids, it won't be hard to make the statement that SR388 wasn't the only planet in the universe that was inhabitated by metroids. It was never established that all planets in Metroid's universe were already discovered and explored. All things considered, the developers can drop a couple of screens with text in the beginning of the game and no Metroid fan will complain about these easy and lazy fixes.

And Samus acting against orders of the Galactic Federation in Metroid Fusion... well, it came to light that a few corrupt souls within the G.F. were acting on their own in the B.S.L. incident, so Samus's record is clear. Adam Malkovich's AI is a thing of the past, because Samus gets her spaceship back.

I tried, no luck. Khuutra's not coming back.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I've always wanted samus to crash land on a planet and be forced in morph ball mode. The entire game would be her exploring and gaining new ball powers and of course at the end she would return to her normal self and escape.

I image the game from a third person perspective, just like ball mode in prime.

The combat would be based around a lock on/strafing style of play with attack moves changing based on the ball powers you gain. I like the idea of a lock on dodging mechanic with quick forward ramming attacks, or a locked on jumping mechanic (with free movement while in the air), then diagonally slamming down into enemies weak spots.

All the metroid staples would work great here, magnetic ball for moving up metallic surfaces, rail riding and puzzles, ice ball for freezing enemies for use as platforms, x-ray ball illuminates area around you showing secrets, enemy weaknesses, good old bombs, power bombs, speed ball (for fast movement during combat, traversal across disintegrating platforms), jump ball, double jump ball, etc. etc.

plus samus's small size could lead to some really cool game play mechanics, like entering a gigantic door locking mechanism and traversing it to unlock the door from the inside. Or being eaten by giant enemies and navigating a moving sort of biological platform puzzle to kill them from the inside (bomb to the brain). It would also lend it's self to stealth (roll from shadow to shadow avoiding enemies she is unable to fight due to size/lack of power)

Plus think of the great corny puns marketing could pretend to avoid "Do you have the balls to help samus face her newest threat" "she has more balls than most men"........

Lastly, there should be no story told by narrative EVER. Exploring the environments should be enough. Features of the environments would imply/tell the story.

Don't worry, I believe that Metroid Prime is the perfect Metroid game.  I want them to go back in that direction but possibly expand.  I'm mostly worried about what they did with Other M and what they're doing with their other games.  (Skyward Sword for instance was very dumbed down in ways and made more "accessible" through handholding and tip videos.)  It just seems like Nintendo is kind of developing trends that are unnerving.
