I believe that Metroid has the largest potential of all Nintendo's big IP's to really bridge that gap between Nintendo and the "core" player. It can be mature and awesome without relying on stupid tropes that other AAA games get caught up in. I just hope that Nintendo someday realizes this and gives us something truly incredible in the Metroid series. Something that takes it to a new level of artfulness and storytelling without compromising what makes Metroid great. They just need to forget about making the game accessible to my five-year-old nephew and my grandma and focus on giving us an awesome game.
So really, I don't even care where the story goes, as long as it doesn't just keep repeating a la Zelda. But I'm sincerely scared that Other M taught them the wrong lesson.
