Forums - Sales - Has the PS360 consoles reached saturation?

It would appear that the PS360 more or less has reached their limits, but this might be common knowledge for most of you already? Both consoles are still selling (and they're selling really well for being 7 and 8 years old!), and they've had a good run - but it seems like it's all over now.

I don't think we'll see more system sellers on these consoles, and that includes GTA V and CoD and whatever else there might be. I've had a look at the sales for February and Mars this year and there hasn't been a single game that's really pushed the numbers. Maybe Bioshock did something to increase sales, but it wasn't much.

GoW:J was released in the week ending the 23rd Mars, selling over 700k that week. But this was also the worst console selling week of Mars for Xbox; the sales had consistently been declining ever since the 16th February (which was the the second or third best selling week as of this year).

Similar numbers are shown for when GoW:A was released on the PS3: it sold over 600k in the week ending 16th Mars, but couldn't halt the declining console numbers.

Tomb Raider couldn't stop the declining numbers either. I guess the question is if the small boost PS360 got in the week ending 30th Mars was due to Bioshock, or something else? And how much will GTA V bolster the sales?

I don't know, this probably is obvious to most of you and it might be an unnecessary thread...

Not quite... but the decline in the next 18 months may be steeper than many are expecting.

You think there's still games to come that will push out good HW numbers?

No.   I had this discussion last year with a lot of ps fans who were saying (and they hilariously used God Of War as an example) that the PS3 would hardly fall this year, if at all, due to the exclusives coming,.

We are past that point in the gen now.

Haha yeah, I remember some of those arguments; PS3 apparently still had a lot of games that would push HW numbers ^^ well I guess we can put that discussion to rest now... Maybe GTA5 will push 50k at best :P

If they're still selling well, why would you think they've reached saturation?

Anyway, I don't think so. PS3 hasn't even dipped below $200 yet.

It doesn't seem like games are pushing the consoles any more; GoWJ and GoWA didn't stop the declining numbers of HW sales, so that's why I think they've reached saturation. But perhaps I worded the entire thing wrong...

Well, those games were, what? Like the fourth in their respective series for this generation? Those particular franchises may have reached their saturation point, for sure, and anyone who wants to play them probably already has the console by now. But it's tougher to say that GTA5 won't move systems when there will have been more than five years since the last one.

But Tomb Raider didn't move any units either, even though it sold quite well. GTA5 might move some units, but I wouldn't bet on a lot of units...

Well, I don't know that I would compare Tomb Raider to GTA... not as a franchise, nor in terms of what the marketing is going to look like. I don't watch much TV, but I don't think I really saw Tomb Raider advertised anywhere. Needless to say, GTA won't be like that.

But you might be right that we are at the point where there aren't many games that really move hardware anymore. This may have more to do with what kinds of games are being made (more of the same old, same old) than anything, though. The systems seem to be selling remarkably well especially considering how old they are and how long they've resisted dipping below the supposedly magical $200 point.

Perhaps TLoU, even better I think will GTA5 do. But I don't see others (yes, that's with beyond in mind).

Well, I don't think I can argue with anything in your post... Next gen can't come fast enough! Or in the Wii U's case, the games can't come fast enough!
