Well, I don't know that I would compare Tomb Raider to GTA... not as a franchise, nor in terms of what the marketing is going to look like. I don't watch much TV, but I don't think I really saw Tomb Raider advertised anywhere. Needless to say, GTA won't be like that.
But you might be right that we are at the point where there aren't many games that really move hardware anymore. This may have more to do with what kinds of games are being made (more of the same old, same old) than anything, though. The systems seem to be selling remarkably well especially considering how old they are and how long they've resisted dipping below the supposedly magical $200 point.
