Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Stock at Second Highest in 6 Months Despite Always-on Rumours

Games Reviews

Microsoft have taken a bashing over the last few weeks, partly because of their flat out refusal to discuss their next console and partly because of the actions of Adam Orth, the Microsoft creative director who took to Twitter in defense of an always online console. The top articles on sites like N4G and Reddit have almost consistently housed articles about why Microsoft are doing things wrong. Why, then, is their stock at almost the highest it’s been in six months?

Although the stock price rises and falls each and every day, a quick look at the six month figures for Microsoft shows that it’s not nearly been this strong since November last year. Microsoft news from the last 24 hours includes an update for Surface, the announcement that their Mediaroom Software will be usable on Erikkson phones and the fact that they’ve called out Google over “pushing” Youtube and Google Maps on Android users. If you’re not looking at the gaming side of things, Microsoft have had a very productive, arguably successful day.

Meanwhile, their gaming division continues to take knock after knock from fans after failure to confirm or deny whether the next Xbox will require always-on connection, and whether the rumour that it will cost $500 has any credence.

So it's good for the investors then?

Microsoft is a stable mature stock with the past two years seeing it go from 24 to 33 with today being 30. I am not sure much difference X-Box has made good or bad given the massive scale of Microsoft works on (specifically with Windows).

Yeah, because investors care about the gaming division.

Ohh I very much doubt a Xbox rumor about Always on is going to change the Investors mind about MS as a whole. You got to remember that Win8, Office 2013, SQL, Azure, outlook and what not are all looking good right now.
Win8 isn't as doomed as it looks it's just a minor step in the big picture not to mention WP8 has been gaining ground lately so I really don't think these rumors will have any impact on a stock price - however the announcement will have an minor impact on the stock price.

As a whole 2013 is a win so far for MS, besides Investors don't care about rumors they care about growth and the profits so as long as MS gives them their money I don't see why they should jump ship

Windows 8 will have 100x's more effect on MS stock than anything happening with Xbox.

Besides, I don't think most people care about the 'always on' rumours. Fact is, my laptops/phones/tablet/Wii (ironically not my wifi-less 360) are always connected to the internet now. Progressively most people's bluray players/TVs are as well. Do they have to be to work? No. But they are anyway. From an investor's perspective I'd think those people whining are the one's who can't afford internet/wifi and they therefore can't afford a new gaming system either.

I am surprised by this, I thought they would go bankrupt after all those rumors

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

The fewer XBox's MS sells, the better for the company as a whole.

How so?

My comment is really just poorly communicated sarcasm.  Any rumors about NextBox have 0 impact on MS share price.  But if we took my comment serious for a moment, XBox has been nothing but a money suck for MS financially for over a decade now.  It has a benifitial role for MS - keeping living room Windows competitors at bay - but as its own entity it doesn't make money.  If 'XBox' was a company, it would have gone bankrupt long ago.

You mind telling us why? Sure the Xbox division dont bring in the cash like Windows or office do but if one division should be terminated it would be the bing part

Edit: You seem to miss the point that the division Xbox is in has had bad profits in years not because of xbox but because of WindowsMOB/WindowsPho and  ZUNE. Subtract everything about the kin, zune and WP and we would have a very good profitable division(except for the years with the original xbox)
