Forums - Gaming - Indie games are mostly trash (Caution, rant)

I liked OP's argument, until he brought Cave Story. A free game with more than 40 hours of gameplay, a huge sense of exploration and danger, a great story with different endings and, above all else, tough game but fun, and he says that beneath its retro style there's nothing?

What?

I don't recall Cave Story being that long. The game has like five or six areas where you go back and forth a little and the thing is finished in about five hours? Has been a long time since I played it. Never bothered with a second playthrough, because the game didn't live up anywhere close to the praise it got. Everything in it feels like the poor man's version of a good game.

On topic: It would be more correct to say that most indie games that are considered good are trash.

My first Rol stamp of approval!

Or maybe you're just elitest?

It's elitist to have high standards?

No, it's not. But there are Indies that reach that standars, and they're not too uncommon as you make 'em to be.

If you belive you have higher standards than others then yes that is the definition of elitism. As in you think that people that like like a lot of indies games have low standards in games and are blinded by pretentious wankery.

It's OK most people are elitist about something.

@TheVoxelman on twitter

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

There are some amazing indies out there, but it's true you need to dig through a lot of trash unfortunately ;(

And if Indie game: the movie is anything to go by, some indie devs are arrogant bitches

You're probably talking about Phil Fish, on which I agree. The guy's totally a douche.

Are you trying to tell me what games do and do not meet my standards?

I've readed your first post. I've extracted an idea about your standars upon it.

Games that reach my standards are games like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, Bayonetta, Zelda Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword, Uncharted 2, Metroid Prime 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns, etc.

World of Goo is an Indie game on that level, but it's the only one I have encountered so far, and I've tried most of the really hyped ones.

Give Dust: An Elysian Tail a try. See if that game lives up to your expectations. It's made by one guy from what I know.

While not every indie game will be amazing, I think a lot of them bring something innovative, or more importantly, something fun to the table.
