Forums - Gaming - why do a lot people dismiss online gaming so much?

here is the thing, i love single player games, i really do. i love a good strong story, epic set pieces and awesome characters. but i also love online gaming, i love the rush of it all, the competition with other real people, needed to outwit or out skill others to win, the huge maps and the more dynamic gameplay.

i love online multiplayer, yet some gamers and i don't want to generalize, but some gamers who been playing for a really long time mostly, dismiss online gaming, they just don't care about it. if i got a nickel for every time i head someone say " i don't care about online" i would have a million bucks. some people just seem to dismiss it, even though there are a lot of games that provide very different experiences.

another thing i noticed is that reviewers dont seem to care much for it, when readying a review about a game that focuses mostly about online, for example CoD, i see a lot of reviewers talking A LOT about the single player, and rating the game more on their single player experience than their online one, yet the game is mostly about its online experience.

when a game has a traditional single player, reviewers seem to mostly care about it and really dismiss the online aspect of the game, even if its more important to the actual game.

so im just wondering, why do a lot of people do this?

Around the Network

Ive personally never gotten into online gaming, not that I have anything against it but if im going to play a multiplayer game id rather do it in the same room as some of my friends or family

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

1. I have never had a dependable internet connection since I got internet in 2001 across continents and via dial-up, DSL, and cable so I never get how people act like always on is no big deal. I lived in metropolitan areas with millions population and still an issue.

2. I love playing game against people. Multi-player can be a joy. However, my experience online is those people are the minority or very quiet. What I experienced in my attempts are spam, gibberish and staggering amount of racist homophobic ignorant insults. So, commnities have been hard for me to find and until I ever belong to a decent one in a game that view will hold. (Online gaming experience has been action, shooter, simulation and sport titles)

It depends on the game.

Some games are not multiplayer games IMO or the online part detracts from the fun as it would simply be better as local multiplayer only.

Example, I've never played the online parts to games like Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, etc. These are solo games to me and I have zero interest in multiplayer components. Same with ZombiU.

However games like COD, Battlefield, etc are all about the multiplayer as that's really all they are good at.

I play the parts that were intended as primary parts of the game, not parts that were slapped on as extras in the last minute.

i also have a rather crappy interent connection but i still love online gaming, mostly in shooters like killzone and uncharted. i always mute everybody though and i dont have a mic to talk to people with anyways. for me its not finding a good community, but rather finding a well desgined game that is a lot of fun to play with other people

For the same reason that some people dismiss single player games. There are people who like one or the other.

It's pretty simple. If you don't care about something you don't pay it much mind.

A reviewer can judge single player.

A good multiplayer depends on whether the game hits off or not. If there isn't a large good community to play with online and for a "long" time, then the online sucks. A reviewer can't know this a week before release.

The joy, to me, in playing with others is the others as much as the playing.  I love football (soccer) but if some...unpleasant folks wish to play I have no patience to be bothered wasting an afternoon being around them.   I'd rather kick the ball around alone than deal with that scenario.  So, in gaming if who I am interacting with might as well be a machine I have no reaction to winning or losing.  I had massive Mario kart parties as a kid and the joy and adrenaline in those races and battles was great.  Make it online and it'd just be some random people then I ask "what's the point in online play if it offers nothing I cannot get with AI"?  Also, no lag or connection issues so its better actually.

then there is a huge error when it comes to reviewers and how they review the game, since to they judge online and comment on it, even though the verdict is mostly dependent on the single player. if they really cant judge an online game without playing it for a long time then they should just review the single player and rate the singleplayer alone. and not judge the online player and rate it based more on their experience with the singplayer aspect

There are very few games where I find the online enjoyable.

Waiting for a game to start is annoying, load times are enough waiting already. Then you always have people that quit directly after it starts or halfway through. Plus most online games just consist of the same levels over and over again. Another problem is I like to be immersed in the sound of games. Turning the game volume down to understand what people are saying, which is mostly noise anyway, is not my preferred way to enjoy a game.

The only games I really like the online are Journey and Dark Souls.
GT5 online is ok, although it always takes a while to find a good room, more waiting before a race starts, and half the field usually drops out during the race. If I only have a little while to play I'll stick to the seasonal challenges instead.

LBP local multiplayer -> never laughed so hard.
LBP online multiplayer -> most frustrating experience.
