Forums - Gaming - UE4 Scaled down to run on PS4, why not Wii U?

They asked if UE4 would run on Wii-U and they started laughing. That should be all the answer you need. Does Wii-U support all the features needed to run the engine? Probably. Does it have enough power to do anything usefull with it? No. The Wii-U's gpu is about on par with the integrated graphics you get for free with a $60-$70 Amd cpu, and is very low-end in the PC graphics market.

It wouldn't make much sense either, the engine is designed for more powerfull hardware and wouldn't do the Wii-U justice anyway. Any engine designed by Nintendo themselves will get way more out of the system.

Mark Rein laughed because he was only aksed about Wii U in the question with no mention of PS3 or X360.  He found that funny.  He wasn't laughing at the Wii U being able to handle UE4 or not.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Obvious - Scaling down UE4 would leave you with basically UE3 but worse as some stuff simply couldn't be scaled down enough and not optimized for the speed of the Wii-U.

Well then you can scrap the first sentence of that post. The rest is still true though.

For the love of god, I hope every developer and their dog doesn't use this engine, UE3 got so long in the tooth in the end and every time I picked up a new game and discovered it was Unreal Engine 3, I shelved it. - Made my eyes bleed! (WiiU users, you should be thankfull it's not on your console!)

Also. I would still like to see the PC visuals improved more, PC's have had the performance to run this engine maxed out for years thanks to Crossfire and SLI.

So here's the funny thing, I think the specs that Sony revealed so far about the PS4 were firstly to get the fanboys hyped and their knickers wet, and secondly to try and get Microsoft to bite and say, oh shit here's Xbox 720. Sony only succeeded with one of these...

With that said, Sony's track record, in terms of console unveiling verses actual release, leads me to believe that even PS4 will be scaled back come launch 2013 (if it makes 2013), which means that that UE4 on PS4 will be scaled back even more. So try not to get too fond of what you're seeing now boys and girls.

Once PS4 is scaled back, Sony will come out and say never mind that, because UE4 still runs on PS4 and still looks better than WiiU. And the Sony fanboys will continue to rejoice.

No one is going to annouce a console and then changed or scale down the pics LMAO. Devs already are making games with thise specs. People believe the most bizarre stuff.

Funny thing, Sony actually changed the specs from what the devs were expecting. By boosting the RAM to 8GB of GDDR5. That's not a scale down in any book.

When it comes to Sony's track record... Only the PS3 was scaled back. The original PS and the PS2 weren't.  The PS3 is the exception, not the rule.

After Mark Rein made his comments that UE4 will have to be scaled down to run on Wii U I decided to do my own research to analyze exactly what the PS4 version looks like. It appears the engine is also being scaled down to run on PS4 since there is a noticable difference in the effects and how much stuff they can put in the environment in real time. Obviously the Wii U version will not look better than the PS4 version but the question comes to mind that if the PS4 cant even run the engine to its full potential and Mark Rein did confirm that UE4 will be scalable to even Tablets and Smart Phones, Its pretty obvious UE4 should be able to run on Wii U with no problem. The only problem appears to be execs and developers (man power to work on porting the engine) interest in other systems since they believe it will be more profitable to make the kind of 3rd party games the engine is famous for (First Person Shooters). This makes sense since he made the statement that if anyone wants to port the engine to Wii U they can but they are not focused on it.

If WiiU was at least close to PS4 in hardware specs, Epic would do it.

UE4 on PS4 won't run like it will on PC, that's for sure.   But on WiiU it would look like UE3.

1.The Wii U has already been showned to be more powerful than the 360 and the PS3, by 1.5 0.5-3 times depending on who you ask.

So there are people out there saying the Wii U is only half as powerful as the 360 and PS3? Geez Louise...

Wii U:

1/4th the ram of PS4/NextBox
Less than half the CPU power
Weaker GPU by quite a bit

Add it all up, and you have a vastly different machine compared to the other next gen offerings. However, it closely relates to the current gen offereings so UE3 will be the best choice for it and will show better games over other current gen hardware, but fall back hard against next gen.

Just like the Wii vs 360/PS3.
